Shipping Charges

One thing I really appreciate is free shipping. Even if I need a minimum purchase amount, I can usually find things to add to my cart to get free shipping.

What I don't like is ridiculously high shipping charges. It's one thing to make money on the product, but making a profit on the shipping cost is cheating. If I return an item, I get a refund for the product, but not for the high shipping cost - which the seller didn't pay. There was a ukulele on eBay for $180, with a shipping charge of over $83. I see many small, lightweight items with oddly high shipping charges. I've put items into my cart, only to empty it when I see the shipping charge.

Yes, I know there is expense involved in the package, label, printing, postage, and workforce, but I shop by price, and shipping is part of the price.

My wife was told about an on-line company called Pirate Ship that offers discounted shipping charges. She heard about it from a quilting business that uses it for shipping quilts out. She's used it a few times and there is a considerable savings...

Shipping isn't necessarily part of the price.
ie. price on-line: $10.95; price in the store:$10.95.
If you get it in the store, there is no "shipping" to your house.
I can totally understand shipping being extra.
It's a benefit when they don't charge for shipping, which means that they "eat" the cost to get the sale(s).

There was a 1" Samsung USB-MINI? to USB-C adapter that I wanted (and needed), lets say $6, shipping: $5....
NO ONE ELSE had that adapter. So I paid the shipping.....
I thought about getting another. Can't find it now. I should have bought two.

UPDATE: Finally found on Ebay.... Considering...
We have much old stuff.

eBay calls outrageously high shipping charges "fee avoidance" and it's a violation of eBay rules.. The seller pays eBay fees on the sale price, not on the shipping price.

I've noticed this on many photo related sales from Japan. My one purchase from Japan was a Nikon 70-210 f/4-5.6D lens with free shipping. I ended up getting that one for $90 which was a bargain when you consider that lens once sold for over $300 on eBay after Ken Rockwell gave it a glowing review and it obtained cult status.

Part of the shipping charge for your ukulele might have been insurance.

And thus I always give the local stores the first chance. I buy online when I can't buy local. I would drive 100 miles before I would consider buying online. But the local stores are going away. As I said "I accept the changes that forced on me because I live in a society and the majority should have the say".

I don't know why some things from things from Japan are listed at ridiculously high prices. I look at ukuleles occasionally, and what sells here new for $250 would be $450 from Japan. I bought a used lens from Japan, and the price and shipping charge were reasonable.

I prefer going to the store also. My limit on distance is about 10 miles... Unless it's a repair part, then it depends.
What I hate is a "store" will carry the item(s) desired, but they are not "in stock" at the stores near me.
I've started to accepting "on-line ordering" more. No traffic to contend with.
(We called it "mail order" in the old days.)

Another reason for high shipping charges is to offload part of the cost of the item and add it to the shipping charge. If the client returns the item, the vendor does not refund the shipping charge, only the price of the item.

You are behind the times. eBay has charged fees on the combined price of the item plus shipping for some time now. The only benefit to the seller is if the item is returned and he does not have to refund the price of shipping.

The main reason I don't buy anything from the USA. By the time you pay the regular shipping and handling then add in the brokerage fees it is far better to 'Buy China' with free shipping to my door. Also I get three day delivery from China and about two week delivery from the USA, and quite often a better price on the same item from China.

I bought 2 of these from Calfornia to be shipped to me in Texas and the shipping charge was $20. The same price as the batteries.
