Grand Canyon N.P. Panorama...

You must have practically grown up in the Canyon enjoying its beauty and challenges. For whatever reason, we never visited the Canyon as often as we should have...been almost 40 years since we were here last. On that trip we stayed at the El Tovar lodge. On this trip, we were amazed by the development since our last visit...lodges, cabins, stores and a large Visitor Center complex.
We've spent several vacations on the North Rim and I've been drawn twice for deer on unit 12A West. Good times! A friend that hunted with me is a rabid treasure hunter and brought maps and info on Teddy Roosevelt hunting camps. We spent several days before the hunt checking out the camps with metal detectors. Found lots of treasures (
)...old out of production cartridge cases, tax tokens, a rusted shut pocket knife, loose change and a token for a beer at a local saloon, old military type mess kits with flatware. Anyhow, good times and memories from years past.

My wife and I spent part of our honeymoon hiking the Canyon. From the south rim down the South Kaibab to the bottom and stayed at Phantom Ranch. Back up the Bright Angel to the Tonto. Camped at the intersection of the Tonto and the Bright Angel. A mule pack train woke us up a little past dawn and we went down Canyon on the Tonto back across to the South Kaibab and up to the rim. We were both young and in love, and most importantly, runners so it was a hoot!
This is the first I've heard about T.D.R.'s hunting camps on the North Rim! I did get a big bull Elk on the Arizona Strip up close to the Utah line way back in the old days! I don't remember the hunting unit. Did you see any Buffalo up on the North Rim?

Yes, not on our latest trip back in late Sept. but on previous trips to the North Rim have seen buffalo in the big meadow just before you enter the park.
Believe old Teddy was bear and lion hunting and established several camps, some with log cabins. Think it was some time in 1990's the Forest Service removed the cabins. While we were looking for Teddys' camps, we were metal detecting what we thought was one of his sites. An old logging truck driver stopped and asked what we were doing. When we told him about looking for the camps and he told us about what the F.S. had done. Furthermore, he volunteered to take us to a few of the sites. What a stroke of luck...he was amazed at what we could find and stayed with us almost til dark. We gave him some of the old coins and the pocket knife. Now days, you can't remove anything of historical value from Federal lands. BTW, I drew those two deer tags in successive years and got two nice Kaibab bucks!
Good talking with you Chief...you've got my interest up and I'm going to Google Teddys' adventures in the Kaibab and see what I can find.
