hasn't every lens, since the beginning of time, come with the proper lens hood packed in the box? I guess it's really just "shrinkflation"

That is not even close to being true. I guess you haven't purchased a whole lot of lenses. I have owned dozens of lenses from a different manufactures over the years. less than 1/3 of them came with a lens hoods.

Canon's non L-series lenses are mostly wonderful. But, they're not built as rugged, nor have features like a soft bag and hood. Buying the extra hood adds to the resale value. Or, should be a feature to consider in any used offers of these lenses.

That must be it, yes. The L series lenses I have did come with bags and hoods, the ones that are not L series did not.

I have two identical lens hoods that were included with the Nikkor 800mm F/5.6 and 400mm F2.8 AF-s "E" lenses. If you had to replace a hood they sold for $1,000. It's nice having a spare.

The Z 800mm if you break the one that comes with it is $149.00

I have a couple of lenses that didn't come with hoods. I found replacements for 1/3 the price that work just fine.

There is no rhyme or reason.

Very amusing; this subject I started has possibly garnered more response than any I have started before

I've got 15 f mount Nikon, Tamron, and Sigma AF-S lenses. All came with hoods. I bought 4, Z lenses and they all came with hoods. The only lens I had to buy a hood for was a new Sony 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3. The hood was just under $80. You know those hoods probably cost less than $10 to manufacture.

Every E-mount lens I have bought from Sony, Sigma, Tamron (over 20 different E-mount lenses since 2017) from the least expensive to the most expensive GM lenses have all come with a lens hood, at no extra cost.

I have been doing this professionally for five decades and I have owned every major brand including Nikon, Canon, Leica, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Fuji, Panasonic and many minor brands of gear, and I expect all my lenses to come with lens hoods. IMHO it is just being cheap by Canon to do otherwise for ANY of its lenses.

Cheers and best to you all.

I've got an old 400mm Canon 'L' with a Canon clamp. And I've got a 70-300 'L' with a pattern clamp.
They look the same but the differnce in quality between the two is quite something.

The Canon clamp holds fast with no movement and the lightest of touches to secure it. The pattern loosens occasionally (not so the lens can fall out - but it will swivel in the mounting) and needs more force to tighten.

What I'm saying is pattern parts are just that - copies. They'll do a job, but perhaps not as well. Caveat Emptor.

I didn't get a lens hood with my Tamron 150-600mm G2.
I think Canon is an excellent company with the best customer service ever

Have you notice you don't paper manual in products,
It's on line they all say.
If a manual cost 50 cents and they sell a million, that's $500,000 in cost saved. Now if a production change happens the old manuals are obsolete.

You're a victim of "inflation" and Canon didn't raise the price, they just lowered the offer, less product for the same cost.

In case anyone has not noticed . . . this is something grocery stores have been doing in recent years. For example lessening the ounces in a can, bottle or box where you won't notice that doing this raises the price. Welcome to 2023.

This past year I bought a new Samsung 75" TV. No it did not include a operating manual. When I called them about this I was told that I could download it. No they did not have a printed one for sale at a price. To download it would take 74 pages. Hmmmm! This is my 5th new Samsung TV I have bought in the past 12 years and all the previous TV's came with a operating manual. Maybe I will choose a different brand TV next time I buy!

just bought a new Canon RF 100-400; a check of the item on the Canon website shows that the lens hood is OPTIONAL !! REALLY? ( On Amazon, the Canon hood retails for $54.95, a generic, which looks identical, is $13.95 )

Where else are they shortchanging customers ?

Was it an L lens?? I think all L lenses come with a hood. If not, I'd buy that generic hood.

My last two Z lenses did not come with a hood either. You spend $X? amount of money on a lens and complain that the hood is not included? For a few bucks buy one. When it is included I can just hear the commotion of everyone complaining that the lenses are to expensive and need to buy the so called inferior third party ones. No one is ever happy.

You want a hood? Buy an L-series. That's the only line of Canon EF / EF-S / RF lenses that include a lens hood. Been like that since 1987.

I was thinking the L series lenses might be the only ones that included a hood, but I think my EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 came with a hood. Must've been an add-on?

Don't bother changing brands
nothing comes with a paper manual. Just look on line and only print certain pages
