I've crossed the 'Big Mac' more times than I can recall. However, I CAN recall four of those times with great clarity, if for no other reason than the fact that I was crossing on a motorcycle, the last time was in March of 1967 (and yes, it was snowing). As for my most recent passage, this time in an SUV, that was in July, 2021. The picture below was taken after I had crossed it the first time on my motorcycle, in September 1965, on my way to college my freshman year.

Note that when I was younger, prior to the bridge being completed, our family used to go up to the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan on vacation and in those early years, when I was only eight or nine years old, you had to cross over on a car ferry. We did this several times, until the summer of 1958, when we crossed the bridge for the first time. That sure saved a lot of time compared to having to wait for and then travel on the ferry across the the Straits of Mackinac, from Mackinaw City to St. Ignace.

Taken a couple of miles West of the bridge, on US2, in September 1965, using an Agfa Silette 35mm camera shooting Ektachrome.

Is there a ferry available for those with acrophobia?

No ferry service available. Some truckers and people in cars will/can not drive across the bridge due to fear, and the The bridge does offer drivers to drive their semi's or vehicles across the bridge.

My parents have had a cabin in an old logging camp (about 100 miles north of the bridge) since the 40's, and before the bridge yes the car ferries took you across the straits. During dear hunting season he would have to wait in line for 4-6 hours, The line along Hwy 2 in St Ignas would be miles long and on the south side along Hwy 27 would be longer. I remember doing the ferry perhaps 2 times. It was fun to take naps and picnic in the back seat
