Decent day yesterday, decided to run up to the UP (Upper Peninsula) of Michigan. At the tip of the mitten one has to cross the 5 mile wide, Straits of Mackinac. In 1957 the 26,372 foot Mackinac Bridge opened connecting the upper and lower peninsulas. The bridge is the worlds 27th- longest main span and the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere.

I crossed that bridge towing a 25 foot travel trailer, it was quite an experience ,my wife was scared to death.

That's a beautiful bridge. Since it was built in 1957, it's understandable that it doesn't have safety piers built around the supports where ships pass through. They make a huge difference in case of a collision.

Fortunately, those bridges with the steel open decks aren't very common anymore. Talk about scary - especially on a motorcycle.

A woman driving across thr Mackinaw Bridge was blown off it by high winds in 1989.

Google Lelsie Pluhar for more information.

I lived in southeastern Michigan and drove a car like hers at the time.

Nice!! And Jerry is correct; those bridges are terrifying on a motorcycle.

As a young kid, when we traveled over the old Jamestown Bridge in RI (bridge no longer exists) the sound that the tires made on the open deck reminded me of an airplane's propellers.

Many years ago I drove the bridge in a Toyota micro Mini motor home. It was a white knuckle drive. High profile vehicles have to reduce speed to 20 at about 30mph winds. They close the bridge at 65MPH..

You betcha. I hate to drive on the grates. even in a car you wonder like crazy and loud. One time I was stopped in stop and go traffic and on the grate. I opened the door to look down to see the water. That was scary.. On Monday of Memorial Day weekend you can walk the bridge. Have done that a few times. That is less scarry than driving on the steel grates.
