1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember that before you get me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me -- it is crucial to my well being.
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understands your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.
8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting too old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: “I cannot bear to watch” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death.
I found this and thought I would share to remind us all to treasure the humans and dogs in our life 🙂

Your list is spot on.
I was doing fine reading your list until Number 10. Molly, our rescue of almost 15 years crossed over the Rainbow Bridge recently. Yes, I was with her as she crossed.
She was my buddy, and I was her main human. No matter where I was in the house she was with me and took me for a walk around the neighborhood every day.
We all miss her so......
Thanks again for your list.

Why can’t dogs live longer?
Great advise. We are at #10 and our journey is nearing an end. It has been 15 wonderful years. We are enjoying every day as no-one knows if it is our last.
Thanks and my sometimes naughty dog thanks you too.

I feel your loss Gene. During our 32 years of marriage we have had to put down a total of seven dogs. It is never easy watching them take their final breath and close their eyes for the last time while holding a paw in your hand. I am not ashamed that tears were rolling down my cheeks in those final moments.
We have just got another rescue dog (beagle/boxer mix) she is a pistol and is bringing back joy to our hearts. I am attaching a photo of her. We named her Willow!

If only they would. The longest any of our last 7 dogs was 15 years.
