Actually a locked card in a D850 results in a flashing error message: "CArd,---" according to the camera manual.

Whereas the message "CArd,(Err)" means the memory card cannot be accessed and might be damaged.
Plus, there are two additional error messages containing "CArd" that pertain to Eye-Fi cards.

"---" is perfickly OK. "Err" is not.

Most cameras behave similarly as that.
I loaded an old locked card today and when not in playback theres a large notice saying the card is locked, but browsing in playback works as normal.

I just locked an sd card in my D850. In the viewfinder it says cd. On the rear screen it says SD Memory Card is locked. Slide lock to 'write' position.

After inserting a differerent sd card in my D850 I got an error message. The card felt different sliding in. I have checked in the slot with a magnifying glass and a light and can see nothing. I have also tried a reset to default settings as well as removing the battery. I have a local camera shop but would rather not have to use it. Ideas?

I would suggest stopping at Service Photo. They can do a quick diagnosis (usually no charge) and will suggest if you need a service technician to look at the camera.

Thanks I had already decided to go there this morning.

If the camera shop can't help I'd suggest contacting Nikon customer support.

Locking is not the source of an error. Cameras deal well with locked cards, acoarst its on a playback-only basis.

Made up words are so cute when my granddaughter does it.
When an adult does it to get attention, not so cute.

My granddaughter quit making up words and started using vowels when she was working on her doctorate.

One source that I checked indicated that the problem that you describe is "Often" related to a "Stuck" lens, (I assume a zoom lens) and suggests trying a different lens or making sure that the zoom moves freely without any resistance. It also suggests turning off the camera, removing the battery and card for a few seconds, reinserting the battery and card, and then see if that clears the camera of the error. If it fails to do so on the first attempt they recommend repeating this process a few times just to be sure that it is not going to work. I have never experienced nor have I even heard of the "Stuck lens" issue but why not check it out. It would be an easy fix and really it is unlikely to cause any additional damage. As far as removing the card and the battery it follows a standard fix for electronics that are not working right; unplug, wait 30 seconds and plug back in. From my experience, this more often than not fixes the problem. Best of luck.

I have tried several cards all with same result. Also the camera will not even let me format a card.

Make sure the card is inserted properly. Cards can face either way depending on how the slot is oriented Try both ways BUT push gently.., ie, don't force it. If inserted properly it will go in smoothly, with only a slight click when it engages and holds. If this is not the case, check the cards for broken guides which would indicate some portion of the card still inside the slot. If none of that helps, you will have to take it to a repair shop for inspection by a professional.., and possible extraction of obstruction? Good luck.

I had this happen to me when inserting a SD card into a laptop computer I'd purchased used. A sliver of the card broke off in the slot.., and I had inserted it in the correct way. You just never know. If there is a rogue sliver in the slot it would explain why none of the cards will register. Worst case, a contact has been damaged or bent?
