After inserting a differerent sd card in my D850 I got an error message. The card felt different sliding in. I have checked in the slot with a magnifying glass and a light and can see nothing. I have also tried a reset to default settings as well as removing the battery. I have a local camera shop but would rather not have to use it. Ideas?
And the error message said: ___________________...

Did you check the lock switch on the memory card to be sure it was unlocked?
Add the specifics off the error message.

I have also tried different cards
I neglected to say the error message said CARD and have also tried another card.

Error on all those other cards? Does the original card no longer work?

• clean the card contacts (Alcohol & Q-tip)
• make sure card is not bent
• see if computer reads the card.
• try another card
Static electricity can kill a card (a zap). Highest propensity when the air is dry.
Wouldn't this be better positioned as a <reply> to your earlier post?

I have tried several cards all with same result. Also the camera will not even let me format a card.

Locking is not the source of an error. Cameras deal well with locked cards, acoarst its on a playback-only basis.

Actually a locked card in a D850 results in a flashing error message: "CArd,---" according to the camera manual.
Whereas the message "CArd,(Err)" means the memory card cannot be accessed and might be damaged.
Plus, there are two additional error messages containing "CArd" that pertain to Eye-Fi cards.
