I've done the Maid of the Mist a number of times with my D750. What I would do was shoot the American Falls if the mist wasn't drenching, but put the camera under the plastic rain-parkas they give out when we got to the Horseshoe Falls. If you want a nice rainbow shot, go in the afternoon of a sunny day. If you really want to try to photograph the Horseshoe Falls up close, you might just end up with a photo of blurry mist. (One way to practice would be to take a showier with your D850 and try to get a shot of the shower head.) Depending on how important it is, you could ride the Maid twice, applying what you learned the first run to the second. It was only $20-$25 last time I was there, and could save you another trip.

Any thoughts or comments about taking a d850 on a Niagra falls boat ride. The one that goes to to the falls complete with most. I know not to try and change a lens but they are also weather sealed. Any thoughts or comments are welcomed.

I use a zip lock and rubber band the open end part to the end of my lens. The bag should be big enough to allow you to push the shutter button. It is called "Maid of the Mist" for a reason, so you will get mist and not rain but still, best to cover the equipment. And yes, in this case I would use a filter on the lens. You should hold the camera lens down as much as possible, when lifting the camera you will get mist on your lens making further images difficult. If you rag the filter it may cause a smearing of future images on the Maid of the Mist.
It is a wonderful ride, I usually shoot the boat from above the rime on the Canadian side and simply tell folks that this is the boat we were on.
Keeping the mist off the front element of the lens can be daunting.

It can get very wet. On the boat I remember the wind and water hitting us pretty hard. These photos were taken with a Nikon AW100. Plus the boat gets pretty crowded.

Good Luck!

You left out the part about the need to put it in a watertight case if you plan to take pictures underwater.

Below is a direct quote from the article you provided, above:
"Recently I took the Nikon D850 and the new Nauticam D850 housing out for a few dives in SoCal."

AND THE NEW NAUTICAM D850 HOUSING <-----

Some people just love to nit pick the details!

Unless you're going to make a career of wet photography, the Rainsleeve should be fine.

I would trust my weather-sealed Lumix gear, as it has never let me down in a downpour.

I don't know the specs on your Nikon, but it is advertised as weather-sealed, and if all the ports are covered with their original covers, and the lens seals are intact, it should be okay unless the boat capsizes.

Is the water at Niagara worse than the videos of folks rinsing off a dirty camera in the sink under running water ?

For some reason, that looks to me to be a photoshopped image, since all the cameras look like they have the same lens on. Plus, the way they are scattered around looks like someone just cut and pasted a few photos of the camera in different positions, all around the ground because the size varies so slightly.

Anyone else feel this was a well done photoshopped image?

His most oft repeated post is to respond to any BW photo in the Gallery with, "would look better in color" , even though he couldn't possibly know that.

Certainly thaz pretty stoopid, but seems pretty easy for the author of the photo to just shrug it off ... kinda like a reply that says "I prefer square format" or "Im just not into cats".

Does it look photoshopped ? Thaz like asking about a cartoon whether it looks hand drawn.

In both cases the obvious is obvious.

I’m with CHG…the 850 is pretty well sealed but I would figure out what lens to put on…probably a short to mid zoom and bag the whole thing except for the front of the lens…keep wiling cloth inside your raincoat, keep the lens aimed down as much as possible, and dry off when done.

Of course it is fake!

If they were looking for reality they would have used a proper brush!!!
