I’d definitely have a clear filter on the lens. Some “waterproof” lenses require a filter to complete the sealing.

The 850 is capable of taking pictures underwater so I don't think Niagara Falls will pose a problem for you

While I do have some doubts about that, lets just say that somebody somewhere has actually done it. My concern would be "Can it do it more than once ?" .... or can it do anything at all ever again ?

Having checked tramseys archive, I think I might understand how he can claim such a thing .......

I have done it with excellent results For you nonbelievers

You left out the part about the need to put it in a watertight case if you plan to take pictures underwater.

Below is a direct quote from the article you provided, above:
"Recently I took the Nikon D850 and the new Nauticam D850 housing out for a few dives in SoCal."

AND THE NEW NAUTICAM D850 HOUSING <-----

The cat's out of the bag now.

Posting completely wrong information to fool good hearted people into damaging their gear is well beyond chitchat and gossip.

You beat me to it...yeah it was in a $3800 underwater housing. Not an insignificant detail to leave out.

Then explain to me how I took pictures underwater with just my camera and nothing else? I''m sorry you all think I'm such a bad guy trying to ruin expensive equipment. I think it's time for me to leave the forum for a while - See you - maybe

With a housing that’s more expensive than the camera.

His most oft repeated post is to respond to any BW photo in the Gallery with, "would look better in color" , even though he couldn't possibly know that.

Personally, I'd prepare a plastic bag around the lens & camera so just the front of the lens is exposed, everything else wrapped, including my hand inside the protection to control the camera. You can buy these, but can make a 1-time use just as easy. And, have a dry towel for afterward. Those steps and the equipment's internal protections are fine to exit this situation with no undue risk.
