No, but I bought a new 1966 2+2 Mustang V8 for about $2500 which was a stretch for a young Asst Prof making some small multiple of that amount. Why does everyone ignore inflation when comparing prices across eras? I bought a house in Rockville, MD in 1963 for $19,200 that Zillow currently values at $469,600.

Inflation. Such a dirty word!

I recall in 1966-67 paying as little as .19.9 and could fill up my VW for about $2.00

Funny. When I was a "kid," I occasionally bought a "$50 car." Drive it for a while and sell or junk it. I once bought a 1957 Olds that came from Florida, and it didn't have a heater. No big deal, I thought. It's a scientific fact that a car without a heater is colder inside than it is outside in the winter.

I was 15 when my Dad bought me a one owner '53 Chevy Belair for my first car from an older gal for $75. I'd have a hard time remembering all of the cars that he bought when I was a kid. I loved 'em all! What fun!

I remember paying 19.9 for Gulftane in ~1964-5. IIRC it was lower octane than "regular" but worked fine in a '63 VW.

Ah...VW's...I could go on for quite a while. I suppose most of us could.

After I graduated from college and got married, we used to take annual vacations in the California High Sierras. I thought that the gas price in the mountains was way too high - at 25 cents a gallon.

When I was stationed in Long Beach in 1966 premium gas was 13 cents a gallon on the base. Outside the base regular gas was 25 cents a gallon.
Out to sea a pack of cigarettes was 11 cents.

I quit smoking in '81. How much are cigarettes now $10 or so a PACK ?

I can remember when you used to be able to go into the corner shop with a dollar bill and come out with 6 piece of bubble gum, 2 pretzel sticks, 4 Tootsie Rolls, 1 small bag of potato chips and 3 rolls of sour apple Life Savers and STILL have change of about 60 cents in your pocket.

You can't do that today because they have the damn convex mirrors on each aisle plus all those security cameras everywhere. Ahh the good old days.

That they were.

Ahhh, bench seats!

I loved the cars with the gas tank cap behind the license plate. They would fill up and when they started moving gas would leak out behind them.

I also remember feeling outraged that it cost me $5 to fill my 20-gallon tank.

ha ha

Before I was driving i recall seeing the gas price $0.129 at the local station. Before 1947 but certainly after 1945.

My grandfather’s hardware store had an old pump with a large glass cylinder. A hand pump would fill it with gas to the one gallon mark, then you drained it into your tank. It wasn’t in use then.

You've got some years on me. I don't remember gas being that low.
