Jarred is mostly correct here, This is more a language problem than anything, Canon has a real case, they have patents on the mount. and SOME folks were making crap. Canon should have done exactly what Jarred suggested;
Put out high standards for approving 3rd party lenses and begin working with a few manufacturers.
Canon's position appears to be NO FOREVER, which is untenable, and pisses off customers unnecessarily.
On the other hand, Canon should be able to require some level of quality standards.

When I viewed Jared's rant about Canon yesterday (much of which I agree with), I encouraged him to actually try some of those manufacturers' lenses before making judgments. There are some innovative and surprisingly good 3rd party lenses being made by several relatively new companies that, in my opinion, Jared unfairly disparages. He gives Canon a bit of a pass for "preventing inferior products that might spoil the user experience".

For example, Samyang/Rokinon had been making a number excellent manual focus lenses and recently begun offering AF too. Viltrox is another company that's been making some fine AF glass. And while they don't make any AF lenses yet, Venus Optics has been doing some amazing things in their Laowa lens line. Those three come to mind and there may be others. Of course, there also are some lower quality (and very affordable) 3rd party lenses too.

Canon's blocking move against 3rd party autofocus lenses comes at a particularly bad time... the introduction of the first APS-C R-series cameras. Canon has only produced two "RF-S" lenses especially tailored for those cameras. 3rd party manufacturers were ready and able to step up with some already proven lenses for crop sensor cameras. For example...

Crop-sensor, AF lenses:

12mm f/2 Rokinon AF (Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X-mount... also sells as Samyang)
13mm f/1.4 Viltrox AF (Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z)
23mm f/1.4 Viltrox AF (Canon EF-M, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Micro 4/3)
33mm f/1.4 Viltrox AF (Canon EF-M, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Micro 4/3)
56mm f/1.4 Viltrox AF (Canon EF-M, Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, Micro 4/3)
75mm f/1.2 Viltrox Pro AF (Sony E, Fujifilm X)
85mm f/1.8 Viltrox AF II (Fujifilm X)

Full frame, autofocus lenses:

14mm f/2.8 Rokinon AF (Canon EF, Sony FE, Nikon F, Nikon Z)
18mm f/2.8 Rokinon AF (Sony FE)
24mm f/2.8 Rokinon AF Compact (Sony FE)
24-70mmm f/2.8 Rokinon AF (Sony FE)
35mm f/2.8 Rokinon AF Compact (Sony FE)
35mm f/1.4 Rokinon AF (Sony FE)
45mm f/1.8 Rokinon AF Compact (Sony FE)
50mm f/1.4 Rokinon AF II (Sony FE)
75mm f/1.8 Rokinon AF Compact (Sony FE)
85mm f/1.4 Rokinon AF (Canon EF, Sony FE, Nikon F)
135mm f/1.8 Rokinon AF (Sony FE)

Some interesting, manual focus lenses:

10mm f/4 Venus Laowa "Cookie", APS-C (Canon RF, Leica L, Sony E, Nikon Z, Fujifilm X)
11mm f/4.5 Laowa "Dreamer" FF RL, compact full frame rectilinear (Leica M, Sony FE, Nikon Z, Canon RF, Leica L)
15mm f/4.5 & 20mm f/4 Laowa Zero-D Tilt Shift (Canon EF, Canon RF, Leica L, Pentax K, Sony FE, Nikon F, Nikon Z, Fujifilm G)
17mm f/4 Venus Laowa Zero-D medium format (Fujifilm G)
58mm, 60mm, 65mm, 85mm, 90mm & 100mm Laowa Ultra Macro 2X magnification (avail. in nearly all modern mounts)
12-24mm f/5.6 Laowa full frame zoom (Leica M, Sony FE, Nikon Z, Canon RF, Leica L)

Some of the above lenses rival anything Canon, Nikon or Sony are putting out!

Don't knock em, Jared, until you try em!

Seen it yesterday. He is probably correct in his assumption but only Canon could say for sure.

The really amazing result in this ranking (published January 23, 2023) is that the Sony a6000, introduced almost a decade ago in 2014, is number 3. This then-revolutionary camera has become a classic!

Perhaps because the price on it doesn't drop.

Once again you profess that only Canon is the best based on the fact they are selling more camara's than any other camera manufacture. That is your opinion. Leading sales does not indicate that Canon is the best mirrorless camera. It is the photographer that makes the difference, not the camera. It is that way now and will always be that way.
Anyone thinking their new camera will make them a better photographer is only fooling themselves if they lack basic skills.
Again, congratulations to Canon for being the current leader in sales worldwide, FOR NOW.
I can shoot Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Sony with great success. It matters not what equipment is in your hands, it's the brain behind the hands that make the difference.
Below is a recent grab shot with my Sony. I could have got the same result with my 5 year old Nikon D850.
PS. anytime you want to put up your Canon against my equipment, let me know. Again, you are just a talking head, while I am a photographer. you should try being one sometime.
Once again you profess that only Canon is the best... (show quote)

And on it goes, folks spend thousands of dollars on their new camera and then defile it by putting low budget, low quality lenses on it. Oh the shame of it all.

Bill you need to try the best of the latest third-party lenses in native E-mount from many makers. Many are just as optically sharp with fast linear focus motors just like the best of the Sony lenses. These aren't your father's third-party lenses anymore, LOL

I have Sigma and Tamron lenses that are as sharp and sharper than some of my Sony GM lenses, faster focusing and cost less too. Samyang's new native E-mount 135mm f1.8 beats the Sony 135mm f1.8 GM in sharpness and it costs much less. I love my Sony 135mm f1.8 GM, but I recommend folks now check out the Samyang first and save money that can be put to other good gear. Do deeper research my friend.
https://sonyalpha.blog/2022/02/25/samyang-135mm-f1-8-af/

Here is SAB's (SonyAlphaBlog) MTF-standard sharpness test results of over 150 native E-mount lenses from Sony and Third-party makers, all tested with the 50mp Sony A1 and 61mp A7RIV. Take a good look where the best third=party lens place.

https://sonyalpha.blog/2019/11/10/which-lenses-to-maximise-the-potential-of-the-sony-a7riv/

I currently own 13 native E-mount lenses covering 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma and Tamron and they all give me superb image quality with my Sony A1, A7RIV, A7SIII. Just spending more doesn't mean you are getting the best optical performance for your money all the time. Times have changed dramatically with the best third-party lenses Bill.

As a successful working pro I can afford whatever excellent gear I need for my professional and personal work ,and in many cases that is an excellent third-party lens.

That is the new reality with the best third-party lenses, and Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Leica, Fuji, Olympus, Pentax and Sigma mirrorless embrace this for their camera users. Yes Sigma makes mirrorless cameras as well as lenses.

Cheers and best to you.
