Green Herons often stand motionless for a long period of time. In this behavior they remind me of sentries, but I caught this one moving a bit. In the second image you can see a bit of the raised top knot.

Nice shots, Dan.... but pls correct ID: This is a young BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, NOT a Green Heron.
