Thanks for these details. I better consider the RX100 vs RX10.

If you consider the RX100, you should also look at the Lumix ZS200. About half the price and almost twice the zoom range. Both are 1" sensor types. I am very happy with my Lumix choices, the ZS200 came after I got my ZS100.

Thanks to all for these comments! Less gear also reduces my anxiety about loss/theft. I’m a hobbyist and enjoy having manual control. I love my Sonya7iii, but think less gear might be good on this trip. I’ll check out all the alternatives you folks mentioned. Thanks!!

I’m not saying you should go this far, but I am also a hobbyist and on my last trip to Europe for a month I only took my Fuji X100V (1 pound) fixed 23mm lens (35mm FF equivalent) 26MP camera, and had ZERO regrets. I had a high quality camera with a great sensor and lots of megapixels and was very happy with the quality of my results. I only had one situation where I wish I would have needed a wider angle lens, and for that I used my iPhone and got a great shot.
So, my advice is to take one camera (not with multiple lenses) preferably not with a 1” sensor and you will be very pleased with your results when you get back home.
Have fun on your next European adventure!

You will do absolutely fine just taking the RX10IV to Europe. I know many fellow pros that have it and the images they get from it under all kinds of conditions are superb, and it has a stacked sensor and great still fps , slow-motion video features and so much more. Nothing else on the market touches it for an all-in-one with pro quality.

FYI, I have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, and currently own A7RIV, A1, A7SIII. I currently own 13 native E-mount lenses covering 10mm to 600mm from Sony, Sigma, Tamron.

I travel with too much gear for work and for pleasure, LOL. But if I chose to go on vacation with just the RX10IV, I would be just fine and happy with my images.

You dont want the smaller yet still excellent other choices. Nothing really competes with the RX10IV and all it does in one package. Just that 24mm to 600mm range is a game-changer for travel. The image quality is excellent.

This longtime pro says yes, take your RX10IV, go light and have all you need, and be happy. Just do it.

Cheers and best to you.

I took Sony a7iii and 3 lenses to Iceland. Would like to travel much lighter for long European junket. Thinking of Sony rx10iv. Rather pricey but like the 600mm reach. Pros/Cons? Other suggestions? Has weather sealing, RAW/JPEG. 20mp 1" sensor. I do print but just for personal use...no gallery show or sales likely! Thanks. Diane

Many suggestions thus far. And one makes the point that maybe 600mm should not be a criterion and with that you need to carry a tripod for sure. But one has already mention m4/3rds and the Olympus Pen line. Size-wise, the Pen line is much like a small 35mm, the old standard for travel. It even looks like those cameras of the film era. I have an Olympus Pen3 m4/3 with the viewfinder attachment. It has flash and is mirrorless and a good AF in-focus light. And can also use adapters for 4/3s and other types of lenses------(below is a photo of my Pen3.-------------------ew

I've never found the need for a tripod with the RX10 IV even at its full zoom of 600mm. Internal stabilization is quite adequate.

It is not the bulk and weight of the three lenses vs. the RX10 that matters; it's what you carry when you leave your hotel or cruise ship. I bought an RX10 a few years ago to use on cruises, but I quickly found it needed to be lighter and less awkward to carry around all day. I returned to carrying a maximum of 2 lenses at any given time out of 5. I'm now shooting Fujinon APS-C lenses on a Fujifilm X-T5, but the same kit can easily be assembled as a 3-lens Sony kit: 23mm, 50mm, and 90mm F2 primes, and 10-24 and 18-55mm zooms. If I want to go lightweight and fast, I'll mount the 23mm on my camera and keep the 50mm in my pocket. Or, for street shooting in cities, I mount the 10-24mm and keep the 50mm in my pocket. For wildlife, it may be the 90mm F2 in my pocket and the 10-24 on the camera...you get the idea. I keep the kit back in the room in a PeakDesign Medium Cube that fits in my carry-on spinner bag, and I usually use a sling camera strap and a pocket when I'm shooting. I'm 79 years old and use a cane or a Drive Medical Nitro Euro Style Rollator walker, and even for me, and this works out fine.
It is not the bulk and weight of the three lenses ... (show quote)

Thanks for this detail. In Iceland we were in a different hotel nightly, so no option to leave things in hotel. No crowds there, so a little less concerned about theft from car and rarely away from car more than 2-3 hours on hikes. My Tamron 150-500 got little use. Glad you are still out shooting!

Very helpful! Thanks so much! I’ll still enjoy my fullframe for dedicated photo shoots, but not try to pretend I’m some pro while traveling! I don’t do instagram, will print a few special shots, do a photobook, focus on history, nature, architecture, people to meet, less on f-stops and SS! Thanks.

I also own both RX100v and RX10iv. I would take them both. But, If I needed slightly better quality, I would go with my Sony a6500 and both kit lenses and one of the RX as aback up.

Thanks. Will do more research.

I handle my a7iii with Tamron 24(?)—200 just fine. The Rx10iv is no longer. A bit bulkier overall. Would only take a small tripod if any. Thanks.

Maybe you are a rock, but the rest of the photo world has always used the rule of thumb that anything over 100mm needs a tripod. And internal lens or body stabilization degrades the photo.-----------ew

Probably a good rule. I’m a novice. Lots to learn. Thx.

It is a great camera. I have the III version. It should more than suit your needs and keep your weight down. Make sure you get a spare battery. I have never done it but you can double the digital zoom to 1200 in jpeg mode. You can also shoot in bust mode for sports or birding.

Have a great trip.
