I took Sony a7iii and 3 lenses to Iceland. Would like to travel much lighter for long European junket. Thinking of Sony rx10iv. Rather pricey but like the 600mm reach. Pros/Cons? Other suggestions? Has weather sealing, RAW/JPEG. 20mp 1" sensor. I do print but just for personal use...no gallery show or sales likely! Thanks. Diane

Looks like youve got it all well considered. Go with that and acoarst report back on the real world "pros and cons" you might have encountered on your trip.

We already know the major "pro" is size, but we also know theres no such thing as a free lunch.

Remember to take extra batteries and charger for the RX10M4 with you.

Similar models for less $ are the Lumix pair, FZ1000 II or FZ2500. Slightly less at the long end of the zoom range.

You might want to consider a pocketable model 'tho you lose more of the long end of the zoom. The Sony offerings are the RX100 vii (1" sensor) or HX99 (1/2.3" but zooms out to 720 equiv). The Lumix models are the ZS200 (1") or the DCZ80 (1/2.3", also 720mm).

The older I get the less I want to lug around a lot of heavy gear on a vacation. Go light.

The only time I'm willing to carry around a lot of gear anymore is when I'm all by myself specifically to do photography. That's ususally walking around the wetlands looking for interesting bird life. I've tried to get good pictures of famous paintings in museums and without a tripod and the right gear it's a waste of time. You get better images in a brochure or online. I take my camera and a zoom lens a take a few pics to memorialize the trip or I use my iPhone. Vacations are for seeing stuff you've only read about and sharing moments with your travel partner/s. At least that's how I look at it. I'm not trying to tell you what to do or how to enjoy a vacation. I don't even know you. I'm saying I've tried it both ways and I enjoy the trip more when I'm not carrying 15 lb. of gear all day.

Thanks to all for these comments! Less gear also reduces my anxiety about loss/theft. I’m a hobbyist and enjoy having manual control. I love my Sonya7iii, but think less gear might be good on this trip. I’ll check out all the alternatives you folks mentioned. Thanks!!

I have several postings here on UHH showcasing the RX10m4 - check them out. For me, the images at 100-200 ISO are GREAT - ISO 400 acceptable - beyond ISO 400 I am not liking - but I only shoot JPEG - if you shoot raw and KNOW what you are doing, maybe 800 ISO and beyond is OK ??
The RX100m7 may be a better option for you ?? (smaller/lighter) - OR BOTH ! Since the RX100m7 is almost 2 years newer than the RX10m4 - it has more focus points and probably a slightly better sensor FWIW......

Newer is nice. I understand no RX10mV is likely....unless I purchase a mIV, of course!

Like you I love my a7III. Its easy to tote and very flexible ... and quite good in low light. Perznally, Ill take low light quality over 600mm reach any day.

The endless threads about travel gear seem to be greatly about "reach". Im blessedly free of that problem. Ive never been shown a "reach" photo that was worth a second glance, so I am not moved to make any of my own.

If my little m4/3 with 14-150 is ever too much to tote then Ill face the fact that its quitting time. If I wanna pretend Im a Nat Geo stringer I can up my "burden" to 12-32 pancake and a 45-200 mini zoom. That 2-lens kit with bag and batteries is shown just below. Weighs about nothing.

Dual lens Pen-F kit (24-400 "reach")

My Tamron 150-500 is just too much to lug around...and needs a good tripod, too. If I were content with 24-200, the Sony a7iii would be IT for me! Just not sure...think I would miss more reach...though I'd miss my wide angle options...so many considerations! On top of planning a self-drive trip-of-a-lifetime...!

Thanks again.

Sony's other travel camera is the RX100VII. It has a lens to 200, not the RX10!Vs 600mm. But how often does one need that much telephoto. Significant advantages of the 100 are that it fits anywhere, can always be with conveniently with you, helps to keep you from standing out as a tourist and records very good stills and video. It is not weather resistant, but it is so small it is easy to keep out of the rain in any pocket, pouch or purse.

Yes, I'm looking at that pocket size too. Thanks very much.
