Awesome set of raptor photos. The attacking Osprey look really angry. Some of the best action photos I have seen in a long time. The Osprey and the last Owl photo display awesome sets of talons.
Hereford, it was exciting to see the action as it happened. I snapped away, hoping to get something worth seeing. I guess I had the settings well enough set to get some decent results. The capture of the Osprey's fierce expression was such a bonus. Thanks again, and have a wonderful new year. jak

Please report that mischievous cooper's hawk to:
http://www.reportband.gov. You got a good closeup shot of both of the bands and their codes. Possibly some people who are following that bird might want to communicate with some other folks who are following the snowy owl.
I really enjoyed your encounter of the osprey and red tailed hawk as well. I go to Bolsa Chica a lot. There is an osprey platform on PCH just north of Seaview on the last power pole heading toward the footbridge. That's a bit away from Talbot Marsh if that's where you saw the osprey. I live in Laguna Beach and have the same camera setup as you took those shots with. Do you live locally?

Alan, I have already reported the band numbers and am awaiting a reply with details about the juvenile Cooper's Hawk. I was just at Bolsa Chica this morning. There are several Ospreys that perch down in the Pocket Pond area as well as a nest in a telephone tower on the North side of Warner Avenue at PCH. I saw 3 Ospreys today...2 together and a third perched on a snag above the Pocket Pond. Also saw a Peregrine Falcon, Cooper's Hawk and pair of Red-tailed Hawks, an Eurasian Wigeon, and 3 Common Goldeneyes. A very nice visit. I live in Long Beach, but I got into heavy birding while living in Costa Mesa some years ago. Much of my birding is still in Orange County. I do a regular survey of the area at the South of Bolsa Chica, and the Osprey platform is just outside our survey area, but I have seen it frequently while driving down PCH. Hope you had a great New Year and that 2023 is happy, creative and healthy for you. jak

Amazing photo session/s. How fortunate you are to see all that happening. Snowy Owl in California? Is that normal?
Sylvias, it's so nice to hear from you again. Glad you enjoyed the photos. Have a great 2023...healthy, happy, creative. jak

Appy, thanks very much for the kind words. Yes, I was very fortunate. No, Snowy Owls are very rare in California. I spoke with a biologist this morning who said there are ongoing discussions about capturing the bird and returning it to its normal northerly climes. How it got here, no one knows. jak
Thanks, Jeff. Hope you haven't been affected by the bomb cyclone weather. I appreciate the kind words. Have a nice week and a productive, healthy new year.
