The world reserve for most of the grains is small. When most of the Ukrainian an Russian wheat was pulled off the market the price jumped due to supply and demand, but also uncertainy for future supply. Also as you suggested the cost of fuel, seed, fertilizer, equipment and labor is all up as well.

Thank the bio-fuels, "clean" energy emphasis/industry for its part in driving up food prices, also, in addition to factors other posters have mentioned.
