Saw where the Leica store in San Fran was robbed. Got away with 180K in equipment, which considering Leica prices, was probably 4 cameras.
So, a couple of lens caps and a case?
I am afraid that in regard to Leica prices you are not too far from the truth. A gentleman here in Miami went to the Leica store in Coral Gables and bought a body (I do not know which one) and two lenses. His bill was $15,000.
I saw many images there made by Leica cameras and lenses. At the size shown I did not see a significant difference between those images and those I make with my Olympus. Just take a look at the images Joe Edelman makes with his Olympus gear. Will a Leica do better? I seriously doubt it.

With digital images including “OFTC” the gap has significantly closed as far as sharpness quality color goes. I shoot both 4/3 and FF each is used differently while the final images are indistinguishable. Today it has shifted back (always is/was) the photographer making the differences. At one time I lusted for a Leica when I was a Nikon shooter but that has passed, though I’d like to add a M3 or Nikon SP just for my collection.
Anybody doing business in San Fran is asking for what they get . My car was broken into at the GG Bridge .

What you have expressed here is what my feelings have been regarding this big craze for mirrorless cameras. I understand that there are differences between DSLRs and the new mirrorless technology, I get that. I also know that the manufacturers are grinning all the way to the bank. I will never believe that the difference in technology is worth these outrageous prices that they're selling these cameras. There will always be those trying to justify that difference and that's what keeps the manufacturers happy.

My Leica M10 Monochrom with one lens and a stack of filters: $15,000.Fantastic, incredible capability. The M10-R is nowhere near as special at the same price. Bought in 1954 for about $250 at military exchange my first issue M3 served well for 55 years. The refurbish lens is on the -R.
It is easy to make smart-Alec remarks critical of things one imagines. Leitz have long been in a category of their own, yes, recent decades of external associations have probably negatively impacted their cachet but the pure product earns its cost.
I would like to take a very different slant on this post. I know the owner of the Leica store in San Francisco. He also owns two other high quality camera stores in California, Camera West, with whom I have done a lot of business. I’m sure This is a very difficult situation for Sean and his staff. I want to personally Say that with the number of camera stores that are going out of business in the United States, that we need to support the stores that still remain, no matter where they’re located. Yes, Leica equipment is expensive, but so are a lot of other types of photographic equipment. Let’s support the folks that are working hard to keep photography alive and well.
Leica is a status symbol for many.
$15K in San Fran. Do the police even show up for that or is it a misdemeanor?
I had a layover in SFO airport last month on the way to PPT and briefly considered doing some $949 per store "borrowing". Wouldn't be able to sleep after acting like all the other lowlifes.

I think a good analogy would be cars. A Ferrari, a Rolls Royce and a old Ford Pinto will get you where you are going. Some faster, some in better style and some dirt cheap.
Sometimes however newer choices have important features, e.g. a rear backup camera. Mirrorless cameras have some properties, e.g. focus peaking that while are not needed to get the job done can have a big impact on the process of taking the best possible image. It's an individual choice as to what works best for you
