Consider listening to the successful photographers when they talk about having gone mirrorless.

With mirrorless what you see is what you get. If you shoot video outdoors you can see what you are shooting. The led/lcd screens get washed out shooting outside. The Canon R6 was y first mirrorless. I love it. This link will take you to a video and stills I shot with the R6.

Once you have glimpsed the fine details of the world through an Electronic View Finder zoomed to 10x, it becomes impossible to live anymore in a world limited by mirrors.

That was the appeal of the SLR, but mirrorless cameras show the difference that camera settings make.

Not sure about the D500, but I had a D800. In my 70’s it was a matter of wanting a “flip” (articulating) screen and rock solid “live view” which the D800 did not have. Getting down on the ground to get a lower perspective is now out of my “wheelhouse”.

I wasn’t interested in having to deal with an adapter to use F mount lenses, so I “bit the bullet”, sold everything and switched brands. I tried the Sony a6000 series but didn’t love the choice of reasonably priced lenses and hated (as does almost everyone else) their menu system.

I switched to Fuji (x mount). Yes, it is APS-C, but any advantage of “full frame” is way beyond my (and I suspect MOST peoples’) skill set. The XF Fujinon lenses are rated right up there close to Leica and Zeiss.

There are “fan boys” (and girls) for every brand so that is a whole ‘nut her discussion

Why should I switch from my Nikon D800/D500 to a Z9?
What will I gain?

A lot of features you don't get with a dSLR, and about 20 pages of argumentative commentary in this thread!

Read and watch some reviews of the camera and see what the pros think.

The video reviewers are Canadian, so they pronounce ZEE as ZED. They also think Seattle has great weather compared to Calgary, but other than that, they're great guys!

The Z9 is the camera Nikon should have released in 2018, and could have, had they been paying closer attention to the mirrorless concept's birth in 2008.

I own 3 Canon DSLRs, and one Canon M-50 mirrorless. My mirrorless is smaller and lighter, and the main reason I purchased it was because I can follow birds or other things through the viewfinder while taking videos. With a DSLR, the mirror pops up and blocks out your viewfinder. Hard to track birds, airplanes or whatever with the mirror blocking the viewfinder..... It is my everyday camera. It will also take up to a 30 sec. time laps video and put it together. Great for taking time laps videos of clouds and sunsets. Mine is somewhat limited in how many exposures it can take, or the length of the exposures, but for clouds and sunsets, it is great!
On the other hand, I would never give up my DSLRs. They have a remote shutter release (my M-50 does not) so I can take multiple star exposures (for star trails or whatever). I am not limited as to how many exposures I want to take, or how long each exposure may be. I also can mount a lightning detector to it and get some pretty good lightning shots. So there are pluses and minuses for each kind.
I would think of what kinds of pictures you like to take, the size and weight of the camera, and make your decision based on your needs. Nothing wrong with DSLRS!

The time is always right to do what is right and buy a mirrorless camera.

I went from a Canon 7dmk2 to a Sony a7III about 3 years ago. I really enjoyed the ability to see my exposure in advance. I started with the Sigma MC 11 adaptor and used my Canon glass(yes it was a little bit slower on the autofocus but it worked well) and transitioned to E mount glass . I have never regretted the move at all.

If you are happy with your present kit don't worry about it.

For sure as has already been said, it will lighten your bank account. I can't afford mirrorless so it doesn't apply to me.

Go used!

Sure, and I get it. I should have made it clear that I wasn't trying to get on Manglesphoto's case. The point I was trying to make, using his statement, was that how someone else spends their money is none of our business. There are all too many on here who are apparently eager to lecture others about their financial wisdom while knowing nothing about that person's financial status. That's insulting. I'm pretty sure that anyone smart enough to operate a camera and formulate a coherent question about a gear purchase is smart enough to know it has to be paid for and whether or not they are able to do that.
