Back when I was shooting film, I read an article that said, when you start to work a scene, walk around with no film in your camera, and take the first 24 pictures that way.
Then when you have all the easy shots out of the way, you can start with the "new" views.
The wonderful thing about digital film (the virtual kind) is the cost. I do much as you suggest but I actually take all of the experimental pictures. The trick is to not assume that any of them will be the final one or the optimum one. Leave that sort of decision until you're back home at your computer and keep looking for alternative possibilities. Thanks for your comments.
