I bought a used Hasselblad camera from Adorama a few years ago, it was advertised as A H3D 39 II and I paid about 3500 for it minus lens. The box had a sticker that said it was a 39 II (serial number on sticker matched). Well, a guy came over to buy it today and he showed me various indicators in the camera that proved it wasn't a II, but the standard H3D 39 that had been rebranded as a II. Things like the top ISO was 800 instead of 1600 and the sensor should start and say it was II and the body wasn't marked as a II . Needless to say, I had to take considerably less money than a II would bring on the sale. I am surprised and saddened that a company as reputable as Adorama would stoop to such a level to screw somebody out of a few hundred dollars.
Some times even with dealers you have to be very knowledgable and experienced to identify 'versions' of cameras.

You should have sent it back to Adorama when you got it.

But he wasn't aware of the difference at the time... 3 years ago.
A friend recommended one of their tripods. When I took it out of the box and stood it up, one of the legs fell off. A connector was broken. After several conversations I was able to return it. I go elsewhere now.

Since the label indicated a II and the serial # matched, has it occured to you that maybe Adorama was fooled also? Maybe the person who originally bought that camera got conned. The actual crook could be anyone or it could have simply been a mixup at the factory. You don't know what the real story may be, so why just point at someone and yell "thief"?
I've done a lot of business with Adorama. I very much doubt that they intentionally "screwed" a customer for a "couple hundred bucks". I also very much doubt that they can make it right after three years, but it wouldn't hurt to give them a call instead of denigrating a great camera store!

More than five years ago:

A photographer and their money are easily parted.
Yes it was that long ago and there was really nothing wrong with the cable just needed to pushed in a little farther, and so thats a non-sequitur, the sticker I'm talking about now was applied by Adorama, plus you'd think when a company employee inspected the camera and tested it, they'd be trained well enough to tell the difference between one level of a camera and the next. As for me, I had no idea at the time of purchase it was standard H3D and not a II. I took Adoramas word it was what they advertised. I work at a Pharmaceutical company, not a nationally known camera store as a camera inspector and tester.

I once had a new car that was manufactured during a period when the factory was transitioning from one series of engine accessories and AC units to another. In one case, an accessory ID'd as the new model on the paperwork was the old series (actually less expensive) and the AC which was ID'd as the old series was the new series (more powerful & more expensive but billed at the old price). My dealer's service guys groaned every time I took it in while it was still under warranty because they knew they would be on the phone with the company a lot over just what was covered by warranty at what rate. When the warranty ran out, and they could just bill me for service, they and I were a lot less stressed.
The people at the factory, dealer and I are all just human and "Shi* Happens". You do the best you can and "keep on trucking".

I would think the fan would give it away.
Q: Why is my H3Dii 39 making so much noise?
A: Because it's an H3D 39!
One year, two years, five years, so what, they advertised and sold it as a II and it wasn't, so I paid more than it was really worth and had to sell today at a lot more loss than I should have if it had been a II
