Thanks Mike. After doing a little more internet searching, I'm pretty sure now that they are Devil's Claw (Proboscidea louisianica) seedpods, slowly turning into devil's claws. If you look about 35-40 seconds into the video below you will see a single seedpod very similar to ones in the photo. Devil's claws are very common in that area and I'm surprised at how beautiful the flowers are before turning into the claws. I grew up in the area and remember the claws but don't remember the flowers.

Definitely Rose hips

I finally found a good picture of the Indigo seed pods and it confirms what you say. Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, the picture is in some weird file format that will not attach.
