I am a devout canon person and this is why:

Check out the photos from all three (tamron, sigma, and canon non-IS) Canon wins hands down.

** IS just makes the canon easier to hand hold

Do you think IS is really that important with the Canon 100mm lens. The non IS version is about half the price. Since it would be used for macro and portraits a tripod would be used. Or keep the shutter speed above 1/250. What do you think.

IS is nice for hand held applications but not that important IMHO. I would not pay twice as much for IS but I am not a macro expert either. I would check with macro experts on the site by PM.

That link should bring you to the True Macro-Photography Forum here at UHH. You should easily find someone to help. Nikonian72 is awesome and willing to help. Even though he is Nikon, he is very knowledgeable and will have sound advice even for canon users.

well I did it. I purchased the 100mm with IS on Ebay. Figured I already had the 60mm macro with no IS so what would be the point of buying the 100mm w/o IS. Can't wait to try it out.

The Canon 100mm IS is the best lens on your list, after that it gets confusing as most macro lenses perform very well. I personally shoot with the 100mm USM but the L version is better, it is an improved lens with IS..

I have seen some great results from other macro users who use the Tokina lens.... but if you have the money but the L lens you will not be disappointed
