Wow, amazing capture. I doubt may have had the opportunity to see this behavior much less capture “the act”.

I had never witnessed hummers mating before, much less capture it in photos. The first two shots are the pair going through a courtship flight display before they "tumbled" onto my deck. I thought they were fighting, but then recognized what was really going on. They were partly hidden from me by deck railing pickets, but I managed a few shots. I hope you enjoy these images.

Wow - how long did it take to get those great shots?

Thanks, Elliott.

I have been trying for a few years to get decent in-focus images of two hummers in flight. They are always moving when close together, not hovering, at least at my place. I do not have swarms of birds around my feeders which might provide easier multi-bird shots. I spend an hour or so daily trying based on the activity I witness. This particular sequence only lasted 2-3 minutes.

Wow...these are all great shots, Bubba! That is definitely a young male. I'm guessing you must live in a warmer climate to see them mating at this time of year. It sure is fun to watch them zip through the yard, chasing each other though! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much, Patty. I am on North Padre Island, Texas. My research suggests that when they mate, the female will have already made a nest nearby and the eggs will be laid within two weeks. This would strongly suggest that the female and her offspring might be here at least through the fall. Like you, I was surprised this happened in September. They are incredible fun to observe.

Thank you very much, Nalu. I do not see many online images of them mating, which suggests the final two shots are not common. I have dozens of shots of doves, pigeons and others caught "in the act", but not hummers. I was fortunate to be shooting them for other reasons when this opportunity presented itself.

Amazing shots. Made numerous unsuccessful attempts to capture hummers "dancing' in the air this summer. Well done for sure.

Thanks, Overthehill1. It can be done but requires a lot of opportunities and a lot of patience.
