Beautifully done, Jak. Great detail in the download. I like the original image, the bird in it’s habitat; maybe that’s why she stopped there, to check out the seed pod.

My thought as well. The seed pod is close enough to the bird so it really isn't a distraction.

Thanks for your response. I admit that the replacement wasn’t blended in well. I tried doing it in LrC and PS would have worked better. I always appreciate your thoughts and advice. Take care.

Jak, try using a 2-step in LR. First, use the Spot Removal brush in the cloning mode. Completely replace the pod on left and the vertical on right, individually, not worrying about the replacement being 'perfect'. Then, change to the healing mode, and find and blend the appropriate source colors to complete the replacement. Use multiple sources for both the cloning step and healing step(s), if needed. I find a feathering setting around 11 works best, especially on the 'circle' of the healing setting.

The idea to remove the entire background stick from behind the bird's head is a task much better for suited PS than LR.

I find that it is distracting and draws my eye away from the bird. Therefore I vote for #2.

Most will disagree with me but I like the one with the orange as much as the other. That orange is part of the environment and provides a counterpoint to the mostly cool colors of the rest of the image If it was my image and being prepared for exhibit or a contest I would remove it simply because I would expect the judges to regard it as nothing but a distraction.

robert, I like your perspective. I know it would be considered a distraction, but I like the contrasting color. Thanks for weighing in. jak

Thanks for the additional suggestions. I’ll definitely give them a try. I would not remove the background stick, so that’s not a problem for me in this photo. Thanks again. jak

Thanks for your insights, johel2. I tend to prefer photos of wildlife in their habitat. I recognize there may be a bit of distraction, but it adds a bit of interest and contrast to an otherwise fairly plain photo. There’s room for both versions, which is kind of why Imasked the question to begin with. Have a great weekend. jak

raymondh, the common standard suggests that removing all distracting elements makes a better photo, so I can’t dispute your preference, but what if Imwant to tell the story that this species, was interested in this tree and it’s pods? Just another way of looking at it. That alternative story would be clearer with a photo of the birds eating or interacting with the pod. Part of the fun is trying different versions. Thanks for weighing in. jak

ecobin, thanks for sharing your opinion. Part of the fun of photography is trying different versions to see what I like best. The responses to my query have been pretty evenly split, so I see that as evidence that both versions have their merit as different ways of telling the story…is it just about the bird or about the bird in this tree with its orange pods? Thanks again. Have a good weekend. jak

If you tend to follow the "rules", it is called the rule of thirds.

Don, I often use the rule of thirds…but I thought this image was better with the bird centered? Also, which side should have the extra room? The side the body is facing or the side the head is facing. Due to distracting elements that I cropped out, neither was a good option. It’s fun to try different things. jak
