Do you prefer with or without the distraction...
In capturing the attached photo, the original included an orange pod ;in the upper left. It is a contrasting element against the blue and green of the background, but it could also be considered a distraction from the main subject, a Cassin's Kingbird, captured in Long Beach yesterday morning. I kind of like the simple, contrasting element and my original version is the first. I also tend to like photos that show a bit of the environment, though this is very little of the environment. What do you think and why?

I find that it is distracting and draws my eye away from the bird. Therefore I vote for #2.

The limbs provide strong lines leading to the bird, so the orange pod is not really a distraction for me. In fact, it reduces the bright space immediately around the subject, which I think helps the photo.
Without, although you could do a better job of blending-in the replacement portion of the image, there's still some of the leaf left and an outline of what was removed. That bit of vertical leaf / stem on our right edge of the frame should be removed too.
And you might move the bird off center.

He IS the center of attention; why not put him in the center of the frame?
Does that violate some “Rule of…”?
Just asking.

If you tend to follow the "rules", it is called the rule of thirds.

Thanks. I find the “without” option is a little blah and don’t mind the pod. But it can be a bit distracting. Thanks for your thoughts. jak

Thanks for your response. I admit that the replacement wasn’t blended in well. I tried doing it in LrC and PS would have worked better. I always appreciate your thoughts and advice. Take care.

I didn’t really have that option because of other distractions that I cropped out. Thanks he twist of the head also made centering feel right. Thanks hanks for the suggestion though. I considered not centering the subject. jak

Most will disagree with me but I like the one with the orange as much as the other. That orange is part of the environment and provides a counterpoint to the mostly cool colors of the rest of the image If it was my image and being prepared for exhibit or a contest I would remove it simply because I would expect the judges to regard it as nothing but a distraction.
my problem with the photo is the stick growing out of the bird's back/head. I think that all of that should be removed
I like the second one. The subject is the Flycatcher and everything leads to it
I see the orange pod as a welcome addition, brightening up the photo.
