According to the B&H web site, the Sony DSC-RX100 VII has a focal range of 9-72mm, 24-200mm full-frame equivalent. I hope that you are talking about the same camera.

I did not refer to the Sony FE 24-240mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS Lens, if this is what you mean. This is optically one of the weakest lenses in the Sony lineup, and I would not recommend it.

I consider the Sony 24-105mm the best travel lens for the Sony full-frame system--it always is my main lens on my trips. I have used it for over four years, have taken literally tens of thousands of shots in many countries on four continents, and always been happy with this lens. If you decide to take the Sony A7R2 this would be a great companion. (Take spare batteries as the A7R2 has a very mediocre battery life.)

PS: If you decide to take the A7R2 you still could take the RX100 as a back-up. I always travel with two camera bodies.

I just realized that and edited my response, but you already responded. I have had the A7R for quite some time, but only recently bought the RX so I don't have a lot of experience with it. I definitely have to check the 24-105 out!

The most productive camera I've ever traveled with is an RX100. Why? Because it is unobtrusive to the people in the culture you are trying to document. Larger, full frame cameras put people off. You can be composing the shot in your head, then quickly "snap" a quality image. Automatic settings are helpful and useful for this.

If you plan to limit yourself to landscapes and scenics on a tripod, the full frame might prove better. But, the RX100 won't do badly at all. Consider trying the four or nine shot square "panorama" for post processing if you need a lot of pixels.

Have you printed from the RX? One thing I do look for to be able to do, is to get a nice wall hanger from any trip that I go on. I know this isn't a problem, at all, with the A7R but, how large can one print with the RX???

Thanks Jim! I do always shoot RAW so that's not a problem. Have you had any experience with any of the noise reduction softwares out now? I use Luminar NEO now and they are supposed to be coming out with a new AI supposedly "seamless" noise reduction software to use with NEO.

I have not used Luminar NEO. But I have a lot of experience with DxO PeepPrime, and Topaz Denoise AI and ON1 Nonoise. They can work wonders. I am not afraid to crank up the ISO when it is needed.

We're planning a trip to Portugal next year and I'm debating whether to take my full frame or my compact. What would you take with you? If it is the full frame, then is their one lens you would take with you? (I have a 28-60mm, 16-35mm). Or, is the Sony rx100vii sufficient for a trip to Europe? Looking forward to hearing your opinions!

I've been to Italy twice Steve. The first time I brought my Nikon SLR with two lenses and a small bag to carry them. It didn't seem too intrusive at the time until I compared it to the second time when I only used my Nikon A900. I've got to be honest, the second time was much more enjoyable for my wife and I ! Here are a few shots to give you an idea...and your RX100 is a much better camera than this particular Nikon. So, that's my opinion and I'm stickin' with it ;-) Whichever camera you choose, enjoy the experience !

I don't see this being a problem. Here is a shot with the RX100VII I took recently when out e-bike riding. I had the RX100 in my pocket and could take it out whenever needed.

Last week’s visit to Coney Island for some “street shots”. Too hot to have lugged my “real” gear on the subway so grabbed my RX 100v vii

I can print these pretty much as large as I want to. It’s a terrific performer. Coaster shots were from a 20 fps burst, by the way.

I've always wandered how good, or not, these programs are. Glad to hear that they are pretty good and, it sounds like higher ISO's are no longer an issue.

I would guess as Luminar NEO brings out its AI Noise Reduction, that they can't afford to have something inferior to the heavy hitters that have paved the AI trail. Let us know when you have it at how good a job it does.

Looks great to me! I'll have to download it and check for sure but it definitely looks good

Set the RX100 to auto. Carry it in your hand with a finger on the shutter button and walk normally through villages and towns. The camera will be upside down and you have to twist your wrist a little to get it close enough to level. Point and shoot at anything remotely interesting. Between the wide angle and low view, you'll get some worthy images.

Yes. My printer is a Canon Pro 100, 13x19 and the images from my RX100 hold up well, even cropped a little. If you mean 30x40 "wall hangers", I wouldn't know. I primarily use Lightroom Classic and do what I think is necessary.
