Unfortunately, I would/will have to add yet another bit to the setup - a nodal rail. See images as to why.
So: Ball Head -> Nodal Rail -> Lens Support Rail

But why are mounting using the hole? Isn’t that rail Arca Swiss compatible on both sides? You should be mounting it to your ball head with an Arca Swiss adapter.

George, This is quite handy, looks well built, and at a fair price. You have found a good solution to preventing minute movements of the camera due to an overhung load. When supporting a long lens without a lens mount, the fulcrum point is at the base of the camera. The end of the lens, and any attachments, may be several inches to more than a foot away from the anchor point. Gravity will pull the lens downward and the length of the lens will act as a lever, much like using a long crowbar to pull out a nail.

When doing macro or micro, the smallest movement is magnified which affects the quality of the image taken for vibration and movement are not a macro photographer's friend.

You did good!

I was also concerned about the strain of the lens' weight on the camera mount.

Just one more thing that may only be used once but will take up useful space. Sorry.

I'll be using this for my macro work, so it'll be used more than some of my other gadgets.

This arrived today from Amazon and may fulfill a need I saw when using lens/camera combinations on a tripod.

I have Kirk version. Helps with my 200-500 when in the sun for prolonged periods. The lens seems to :sag" a bit and AF becomes inaccurate. Hanging on a D850.

Thank you! Comes the Dawn! My ballhead has an Arca Swiss mount. I was mounting the lens support rail to the ballhead via the standard camera mount.
Thanks again for your input.

George

Lens support rail mounted directly to the ballhead per SuperflyTNT's suggestion.
