This arrived today from Amazon and may fulfill a need I saw when using lens/camera combinations on a tripod.

I have used a similar one (but much, much more expensive) from RRS for a number of years. I used it with the foot of my long lenses, ie. when I shoot at more than 500mm, especially if it is very windy. Much better to have two points of contact than hanging in the air.

That looks a very decent bit of engineering for the price. Would have been useful to me during my macro days.

It’s interesting that you don’t have the lens hanging anymore but you set it up so the entire weight of camera and lens is ahead of the ball head. I would move it so the center of gravity is centered over the ball head.

I have been advocating these lens supports for quite some time now ......

George, This is quite handy, looks well built, and at a fair price. You have found a good solution to preventing minute movements of the camera due to an overhung load. When supporting a long lens without a lens mount, the fulcrum point is at the base of the camera. The end of the lens, and any attachments, may be several inches to more than a foot away from the anchor point. Gravity will pull the lens downward and the length of the lens will act as a lever, much like using a long crowbar to pull out a nail.

When doing macro or micro, the smallest movement is magnified which affects the quality of the image taken for vibration and movement are not a macro photographer's friend.

You did good!

I use a Nikon PN-11 extension tube to accomplish some of what this rig can accomplish. You can attach a arca swiss lens plate to the bottom of the PN=11 tube. Once attached to the lens, the lens has been modified to it can function as if it had a tripod collar ring built into it. This shifts the balance point of the camera and lens, making it much easier to keep it from being front heavy.

if attached to a macro lens it allows for closer focusing/more magnification. When attached to a non macro lens, it makes that lens easier to balance.

It does not allow for AF, but depending on your Nikon body, it does allow for transmission of shooting data.

Nikon no longer makes it but you can buy it used.

Google for more pictures of how it is used.

Just one more thing that may only be used once but will take up useful space. Sorry.

An important observation.

Unfortunately, I would/will have to add yet another bit to the setup - a nodal rail. See images as to why.
So: Ball Head -> Nodal Rail -> Lens Support Rail
