Slow images or slow pages?

Slow images, pages are OK. Less than state of the art laptop but still very slow compared to my usual experience here.

Have you tried re-booting your system to free up resources. In addition review what else is running on your system?

At 9:15 a.m. in southern Wisconsin, downloading is very fast, not just the small snapshots but the download of the full picture.

I found this thread, but there may be others on the same subject. To the best of my knowledge, Comcast does no throttling in my area and I just checked it with Ookla... 195mbps download and 25mbps upload. I have been getting the slow rendering of downloads on UHH as well for a few weeks on and off, but now it's mostly all the time. I can watch a pic render slowly from the top down like back in dial-up days. Anything further about this?

Interesting, the datacenter that hosts images is in Virginia. So I would expect people on the west coast to have problems, but not in PA, regardless of the provider.

And to confirm, the pages load quickly, right? It's the images that are slow? Or are pages also loading slowly?

You are correct, picture file downloads are the only area where anything is noticeably slow and that is only in recent weeks. I've never noticed anything slow before that.

OK, may displaying of UHH photos is great, so I just checked my internet speeds: down, 69 Mb/s; up, 9.8 Mb/s. Thus the problem is not with your Comcast speed. I would therefore be almost 100% sure it is your processor. Can you give us more info?

I will presume you are running Windows? If you are using a Mac, just give us similar info even if you cannot find identical values. Which version of the operating system do you use? For example, Windows7, 10, 11, etc. How much RAM do you have onboard your motherboard? What processor does your motherboard have--make and model/version if possible? What operating system are you using? And one more piece of info that is a bit harder to come by. How much virtual memory do you have on your hard drive or SSD?

To view your virtual memory settings on your hard drive, i.e. how much fast accessible hard disk space is available for Windows to use as if it were real RAM, press the Windows key plus uppercase X at the same time. Then click on the Advanced tab and finally select the Change button. This will show the minimum virtual memory and the maximum available to your operating system without really changing it. Many times, these values could be doubled or quadrupled and will make a large difference in lag times on processing of daata such as graphics. ---Richard

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU card with 6Gb VRAM. Windows 10 with updates current and an older I7 CPU. 64Gb DRAM. 94Gb free space on the boot drive. I regularly view photos on DPreview, Nikonians, Flickr, and other photo websites without incident. Did I miss anything? The menu I get when hitting X + Win key has no advanced tab?

Your system should be fast enough, but if you are at all like me,, we tend to max out the resources we have because they are there. I have only 16 MB DRAM, but it is full of my processing and standby. So, you might want to look at what other websites you have open that might be using processing power. Gmail, for example, ties up a lot. Java engines will, too, and videos definitely do.

For a longer but still a direct route to the Performance Options, do this: Settings/System/About. then under the list of characteristics of your system will be three or so links. The third one will be "Advanced system settings." Click this one; and then click on the button "Settings" under the first group called "Performance." This will bring up the window I was referring to.. where you select the Advanced tab second from the left at the toop of the window. --Richard

Found it! The minimum allowed is 16Mb. Recommended 9075Mb. Currently allocated 9728Mb. Yes, I tend to keep tabs open with other programs running, which was why I coughed up the extra bucks for the Nvidia card and the extra RAM when I bought it. BTW, it's also Windows Pro if that makes any difference. (Also, it can't be upgraded to Win 11, so I'm saving for a new one in a few years assuming the circumstances remain similar to those of today.)

Sounds like you have a good system. With maybe just a bit6 of tweaking (closing some programs/websites, and upping the virtual memory) you might be able to mitigate your slow photo display. --Richard

I changed it to 10000Mb min (initial) and 20000Mb max, so I'll see how that does. Thanks to both for the replies.
