Saw him twice in person & he put on a real good show. That was many years ago.

If you like Marty you may enjoy Tompaul and the Glaser Brothers. The Glasers opened for Marty at one time.

Marty is also one of my all time favorites. I lived in Nashville in the mid-1960s and he was very popular then. One thing about him that isn't widely known is that he owned a race car and drove it in week end races, at the fairgrouds I think.

I have read that sometimes he jumped out of the race car and changed clothes in a vehicle on the way to a performance.

Another thing about Marty. He, as race race car diver, damned near killed himself In fact he had extensive plastic surgery to his face. Almost disfiguring. Look at a photo of a younger Marty, large difference compared to the older Marty.

One of the greats I grew up with. Check out Billy Walker , they sound similar, both made great songs.

One of the masters from a time past.
Good story tellers are no more and we once had so many.
The likes of Marty along with Hoyt Axton, Tom T. Hall, Tommy Overstreet & Kenny Rogers just to mention a few.
We could go on and list them all day.

There has never been another voice like Marty's. It was definitely one of kind.

In the 70’s, I got to attend a concert with him at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), and got to hear him sing El Paso and El Paso City back to back. My favorite song by him has always been Big Iron.

[quote=SteveR]I like to pull up Marty Robbins on YouTube and just let his songs go from song to song. So many great ones. Here is, perhaps, the ultimate sad cowboy romance, El Paso.

Here's one of his non-western songs that was one of his best. Singin' the Blues.

I always thought of “Singin’ the Blues” as a Sonny James song
