Serious overkill for photo processing, yet crippled by the small 17" monitor of a laptop. Not very portable either. Have you ever owned and traveled with a 17" laptop? There's a reason they're poor sellers. Unless you're really on the move, you'd be much better off, and save a lot of money, with a desktop.

I edit with a 15" laptop, as well as the desktop with 24" monitors.
The laptop is in the family room with the TV, the desktop is upstairs in the office, no TV.

What software are you going to install to this beast? Office? PS/LR/Afinnity Photo?
Luminar 3 since I had it on my previous laptop.
Will redowload the open source Darktable, maybe raw therapee.
Any suggestions for photo editing ? This will be the mainly use for this beast. Hopefully, it will last for a long time. I am 3 years away from retirement and photography and golf are my main passions.

As others have mentioned, a mouse would be a good addition. I have a 13" touchscreen XPS and still prefer to mouse it. For editing, connection to a larger monitor would be good, too.
Question - do you intend to travel with this laptop? If so, any 17" model might be a tad heavy. I travel with mine and use it for nightly copy of image files from my camera for backup purposes in addition to email, etc. I do very little editing while traveling, mostly because I do not post to social media. I just like to see what I've captured! I save my serious editing for when I return home and use my self-built tower.

Could be travelling but the main reason is to have the flexibility of use in the house. Basement or dinner table upstairs.

Hum, desktop... will have to take a look. Could have a as good computer for a cheaper price than a laptop ?
Desktops are typically less expensive than laptops. Not sure why, they are bigger.

Less technical challenges to pack the components into a larger box?

Here are the specs. Do I miss something? Better suggestions for the price? (2900 $ Canadian+taxes)... Dell XPS17 Eric
Sweet! Besides the mouse, get an external hard drive for backup as others have recommended. In fact maybe 2!
I just bought two WD 14 TB HDs to replace my two WD 10 TB HDs. They were on sale on Amazon for $200 each.
How about a small portable Wacom (or other brand) tablet? After you are practiced, you won't go back to a mouse!
I also have an older 21" Wacom Cintique tablet paired with a desktop and 27" monitor which I love.
Maybe a monitor calibrator from Datacolor or other OEM?
Just my 2 cents! Be well! Ed

Specs are fine except for that price, I’d like to see more than 4GB VRAM on the graphics card if available.
Graphic Card & Processor for 2

Agree with the external drives only I would try to go with SSD drives. I have a pile of HD's that crashed and had to be recovered.

The specs are fine. I'm writing from an older XPS laptop now. Personally, I prefer a larger monitor, working at a desk with an external higher-quality mouse. So, you might want to look at a mouse too, a blue-tooth ergonomic design.
I agree, and I have 2 28" 4k monitors at one workstation, and 2 32" 4k's at another.
But, like many of us, I take trips and like to edit some or all of my fresh stuff daily. I also like to upload a few to facebook or elswhere. I then use my cell as a mobil hotspot. So, at those times, I'm stuck with my oldish 15.6' nothing special display.
It's not a priority, as my 8th Gen i7 9750H and 8750H CPU's with dedicated GPU's work fine, but I'll eventually get a better laptop, with close to the latest specs, even if it costs $1.5-2.5k.
