In my Nikon D500 the camera gave me CArd err also said camera didn’t recognize card insert another. I removed card and cleaned it with dry cloth and reinstalled card several times to no avail. My PC and card reader are fine with card. So I downloaded card onto PC then tried to format card in camera and again got the error message. The card is at least 2 years old with 1000s of photos taken, downloaded and then formatted. Any ideas for failure or fixes? Card is a 64 gig

Retrieve your photos on your computer then toss the card in the garbage. Consider yourself lucky you were able to recover your photos. Cards are cheap nowadays and not worth your time.

Just out of curiosity, was it a SD card or a XQD/CFE card?

Some older cameras cannot use the newer card structures.
Some older cameras may not be able to use large cards.

But he did say identical card.
So I'd ditch the card.

Copy the data to your computer. After buying and formatting and successfully testing a new card in your camera, do one of the following:

Duct tape it to your car tire and drive around the block. This won't fix the card, but will ensure no one else wastes time trying to fix it, either!

Soak it in a shallow bowl of chocolate milk placed in the sun. Then mix four ounces of Sangria with one ounce of Everclear. Drink the latter. That might make you feel better (or not!) about the card not working, as you clean up the mess.

Duct tape the card to the face of a sledge hammer. Break a brick with the combination while growling horribly. The card and the brick won't work again, but nearby kids will laugh or be terrified!

In the end, it is time to buy a new card and discard the old one. New cards are about half the cost of a roll of Ektachrome 100 slide film and processing, which yeilds probably 6 to 10 decent slides.

Time to buy a decent brand name card such as SanDisk or Lexar or Transcend. BE SURE to format it with the exact camera you will use it in. This ensures that any special files the camera needs to run its operating system get loaded onto the card before you use it.
