Thank you to all who responded to my query. Your comments added to both sides of the pro/con seesaw that I had been mulling over for months.

This week I received the word that my name had reached the top of the wait list, and a Z9 was available. I declined. Here’s why:

1) weight. One of the (few) things I am good at is BIF with my current D500/500mm PF, and I was not looking forward to adding to the heft.

2) FX reach. Yes, the Z9 has a DX mode, but I already have that.

3) New camera to learn. I know that will have to happen sometime, but not today.

4) Taking shorter trips with the money. Hitting Cape May this September.

5) Price and other spending priorities. Jeez, $5,500 is a lot of money.

I know that every time I see an out-of-focus shot, I will have my doubts, but the Z9 or its brothers will always be out there if I change my mind.

Be well, and stay cool.

Given the supply chain, you might wait a long time for the Z9 and the really popular 100-400 lens. We were in Costa Rica and my reaction is that your travel guide will probably have more impact on your photos than a new camera would. I have a Z7-2 and am happy with it, but it’s not making me a far better photographer; one major plus is that the sensor allows more serious cropping than I would be able to do with my other cameras.
