But he DID say Denver, CO..............

There several Denver in the various states. Something about people who could not handle the nose-bleeds of the "Mile-high" city in Colorado, I'm told.

Haha.

Lots of same name cities in multiple states, and some in other countries. (Many US names are derived from them.)
Some people don't realize that and simply mention <city>, where it's up to us to deduce to which one they are referring. Here at UHH, one also should state country to be safe since the forum is worldwide.
But we Americans are on our own little world don't we.

It may be cool, but air pollution is/was of any place I've ever been to. I believe it is surrounded by mountains, a huge caldera? The morning we left, the car AC was bad, so I rolled down a window, had to put it up and just sweat, air smelled and tasted of half burned gasoline.

As other have pointed out, Mexico City is 7350 ft above sea level. Don't know what it is where you're at in NC but it probably is not higher than 2500 ft. When I took geography in college a long time ago, they said that temperature drops about 3 degrees F for every 1000 ft of elevation for a given spot. Assuming the same general weather conditions for different spots, that would be about 15 degrees F cooler for Mexico City. I'm sure the answer is in there somewhere. If not, I'd check El Nino and coriolis force.

Again, I used Denver, COLORADO as an example. When I posted this yesteday, it was 77 n MC and 88 in Denver, COLORADO, sittig at at abt5200 ft ele. The issue obviously concerns more than simple elevation, but I don't know what that is.

A combination off frontal, high, and low pressure systems along with prevailing winds, in addition to elevation.

I believe MC sits in a sort of volcanic bowl at its elevation. There are lots of temperature inversions the year round.

I worked there off and on for about five years, and the pollution was horrible, and this was ca. 1989-1994. However temperatures were very mild, and I think the only garment I had besides a light jacket was a sweater. The evenings would cool off quite nicely.

You are correct in presuming that weather is more than just simple elevation. The rotation of the Earth plays a big role as well. And there are so many other components, such as the winds at differing elevations, that go into the weather. Even the topography has to be considered. And the conditions of the surfaces of the Earth. When studying for Glider Piloting, there are classes for understanding thermals that are important in the operations. One of the "fun" classes in SCUBA are about thermoclines. Toss in micrometeorology into the bag. The answers to the variants in weather can leave one with a headache.
