I have a HP VICTUS and all I do when I'm done using it, is close the cover.
For an hour or all night.

I don't like to leave things running.

A number of tech computer sites recommend just closing the cover.
They put themselves to sleep.

I missed the part where you said you have a desktop.
My last desktop also would turn itself back on even after doing a 'SHUTDOWN'!
Sometimes the only way to keep it from restarting itself was to turn off the ups.
Didn't have to hit a key or slightly move the mouse.
Wound up throwing it in the garbage as a laptop takes up less space.
Good luck dealing with that issue.

I never have used hibernate. Sleep works better for me. Should sleep forever.
