I learned two spaces in Typing class on a manual typewriter. I'd bet it was changed to one by publishers to save on paper. At work the company changed the default font to Calibre to save on toner cartridges.

Well, then they have a lot of double spaces to remove in my posts since I learned it as part of "penmanship" and "typing" (not keyboarding) I learned on an early IBM electric in High School in 1959. Then I got a Remington Travel Writer for Christmas my sophomore year and started typing all my school reports etc. My English Comp teacher actually sent a thank you note to my Mom. My handwriting was/is very small and hard to read, it hadn't improved since I got the "best cursive writer in class" certificate back in 2nd grade-Catholic school and yes they taught cursive in second grade.

Common language/writing skills are devolving rapidly. I therefore have little respect for new trends in language/writing. Two spaces is correct.

I always have used (or have tried to use) two spaces -- because it looks better, and is more readable!

How much extra does the additional space cost? I'm guessing it's all down to money saving yet again! LOL.

I used 2 spaces between sentences until a few years ago. Apparently, that rule was recently confirmed as 1 space between.

Wanna write something in code that an 18 year old won't be able to decipher, use cursive.

Yes, I do the same thing. Double spacing has been the rule for years, but it died away during the digital age. I still do it, even if the Web deletes the second space. I also use the Oxford comma.

2 - 1 = 1

It "matters" one space.

The standard was to use two spaces following ending punctuation in typewritten documents because of the fixed-spaced fonts used. It made reading the documents much easier. With computers and word processors we mostly use variable-spaced fonts, so only a single space is required following ending punctuation to make reading easier.

I just looked up the rule at this website:

https://www.thesaurus.com/e/writing/is-there-1-space-or-2-after-a-period/

Seems that the rule is one space after punctuation.
