My first wife was a Katherine Gibbs graduate. She used two spaces. I tolerated that.

When I started writing HTML I found that it used one space, no matter how many I put in there. If you want a large space there are special HTML characters for that. Have not checked recently...

Edit: Interesting. the page code generated here for the above line is " ".

The reason for using a double space after a sentence when using a typewriter was that they were monospace type - every character takes the same amount of space, whether it is an "i" or and "m". Most computer type is variable - each character only takes the space it needs. Therefore only one space is needed for computer type, and the body of type just looks better with one.

They have this thing called a computer, it can remove a lot of spaces in milli-seconds. LOL.

There is still an ongoing controversy about 1 or 2 spaces. That's why I said I'm in the 2-spaces camp.

Hmm interesting that UHH removed the two spaces in your original post, but on my computer the "quote" part, I can see the two spaces but then they don't appear above after posting.

Seeing two (or more) spaces in whet you type is different that what is displayed after you hit "Send".
What people type in the reply box is data that the parser reads and is used to create the code for the web page. The parser is removing the extra spaces.

Thus when I type " " in the reply box, the parser creates " " for the web page code.

It all depends on how the parser is written. The parser for HTML in (at least Firefox) eliminates extra consecutive spaces, requiring the use of "&nbsp" for more than one consecutive space.

Good info right up to when you say "just looks better with one". THAT Mr Swanda, is subjective.

And professional printers of publications or books agree with me.

This is all a dichotomy between common usage and style publications from a previous age. (And yes, it's my age...).

Styles change with the times. That doesn't make either style right or wrong.

Good for them.
Glad they see it your way.

Some of us don't,
and some don't care either way.

“For much of the twentieth century, typographers used double spacing after each sentence, but single-space formatting has become the standard in twenty-first-century word processing. “

Letting the software guys dictate your style is liking allowing your auto mechanic to dictate where you go on vacation. I’ll stick with 2 spaces thank you.
