After much digging online, it seems that the Z50 will only back button focus in AF-S. Follow the suggestions of other posters and use AF-S. If you get the green square, auto focus worked. Then change to AF-C and see that the square won't turn green. What a great gift from Nikon!

I have two Zs and find them to be not very well thought out. Normal for Nikon.

YouTube would help.

You are very correct. What is nice about using YouTube is the Fact that You can get different Perspectives on HOW TO SET your camera up and You can have your Camera on Your Lap and Pause the Video if You need to punch in something on Your Camera to try. It's a lot quicker than reading the Manual and by being able to Visualize instead of reading Black and White, You will retain more from a 1 hour to 1.3 Hour Video. Good Luck and I think that You are going to enjoy the Z50

I shoot with the Z50, have been for several, months. I had it set to back button focus. IO was watching a video by Ken Rockwell and the settings he uses and made a few changes. Now I cannot set up back button focus. I deactivated the shutter button focus, went into the shooting menu and enabled the AEL-AFL button to AF ON, but it will not focus. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

I also had the same problem after watching Steve Perry’s set up for the NikonZ50. I ended up calling Nikon and they were super nice and very helpful. If you did like me and put the shutter click sound to quiet…it will not allow you to use back button focus. I don’t know why but it was an easy fix. However I still have a noisy shutter click. I am now in the process of trying to update firmware. Good luck with your Z50.

Wait what? Silent shutter disables BBF?? That's just bad software/firmware. Bad Nikon Bad Nikon.

Once again Nikon proves it is first and foremost a Hardware company and not a software company.
