Thank you Fredpnm,

I know about the U setting which doesn't save all the settings by the way. :( And I back up the settings to a card and then save them on my computer. I have used that to restore settings, after getting a camera back from service.

But my going in position is never reset the camera, it's a last resort, only used when the camera is completely non-functional.

And when I have had a non-functional camera, reset didn't work.

And I have a similar experience, with Nikon, I have never had a Nikon get confused, ;). However some of my other camera brands have gotten confused. :( I fumble around and remove entropy accordingly to restore order. Usually I learn something from that exercise, painful as it may be.
Thank you Fredpnm, br br I know about the U sett... (show quote)

Very well, glad you are on top of the camera's abilities. I just thought I'd thrown that feature out in case there are folks who didn't get to page 315. Page 315 is a long way into the manual - I usually fall asleep long before I get to page 200 - much less have much hope of getting to 315.

Thank you again.

Yep reading the manual is a GRIND but I endeavor to make through at least one reading whilst holding the camera in my lap and trying things. And this is why I only buy a new camera body every 20 years. LOL.

Perhaps you should consider using one of the three "U" settings or if that isn't suitable save your camera settings to an SD card. You can then reload all your settings from the card if you did need to RESET the camera. See page 315 of the user's manual. There are times when doing a RESET is the only suitable solution to a camera that has gotten really confused. Not that Nikon cameras ever does...lol.

I believe the U settings only store exposure settings, not camera settings.

I had to do a "reset all settings' in my Z50. Now I am not able to set up "back button focus." I deactivated the focus on the shutter button, went into the custom control menu, and programmed the AEL-AFL button to AF-ON, but no luck. What am I doing wrong?

YouTube would help.

I recall fumbling around for a while with my Z7 to program BBF.

That I why I never RESET the camera unless it's absolutely completely non-functional. It takes years to put all those custom settings back in place.

Agree 200%.

Whenever someone here has a user error glitch, several idjits who have never tried it will always butt in to suggest a reset. If the UHH parrot flock recommends it then you just *know* that its a fuggedup idea.

Toadall reset is for when you buy a used camera and you wanna do a Sinatra on it.

Otherwise, you nevvuh even heard of it. Keep a list of any hogsters that casually suggest using it ... and ignore any other "advice" that they might happen to post (unless they also mentioned saving your set up on a card).

I vaguely remember a way to save settings to an SD card. Or maybe I was just dreaming.

Jerry-there are a couple of points to be made about this, at least for Nikon cameras..

First, this process saves camera setup information, but it does not save everything. Any Picture Control settings are not saves, nor are any custom ones that have been created, as one example.

Second, if you format the card, the setup file will be erased.

Third, file naming/numbering is part of what gets reset. It's possible to restore the sequencing but doing so requires a number of steps and is probably beyond what most people are willing or able to do.

I shoot with the Z50, have been for several, months. I had it set to back button focus. IO was watching a video by Ken Rockwell and the settings he uses and made a few changes. Now I cannot set up back button focus. I deactivated the shutter button focus, went into the shooting menu and enabled the AEL-AFL button to AF ON, but it will not focus. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

After much digging online, it seems that the Z50 will only back button focus in AF-S. Follow the suggestions of other posters and use AF-S. If you get the green square, auto focus worked. Then change to AF-C and see that the square won't turn green. What a great gift from Nikon!

Nikon has an 800 number. I have used it several times. They are very helpful and you are dealing with the manufacturer ‘s customer service.

Not having your exact camera, the one thing Ive noticed about nearly all cameras is that you cant use BBAF in the "Ultra Auto" or "Safety Green" modes even when you have programmed it correctly.

Acoarst I dont know what mode you were using using when you encountered your current problem.

Off subject, but can you please explain the meaning of the word “acoarst”?
