Pipe Organs in Europe
I have traveled a lot in Europe and I have an affinity for pipe organs. Over the years I have captured photos of some very elaborate and beautiful instruments. Herewith a small sample (no British Isles).

I find I really like 7 and 8 for their simplicity and think 11 is ugly. You did a great job photographing these.

When I was a teenager, I was privileged to observe the installation of the pipe organ at the Whittier First United Church in Whittier, CA. While not at all ornate it was eye opening to see just how extensive whole process takes place and how the pipes are controlled.

What a marvelous combination of music, technology and art. Given the stark difference and simplicity of design in the St. Jacob Church in Germany, is it relatively new? The mind boggles at what it would cost to duplicate these today, multimillions no doubt (if the artists could be found). You're very fortunate to have seen them all.

Lonshadow, thanks for the nice approval. Glad you liked them.

Architect1776, thankd for the Grin. Happy you enjoyed them.

PAR4DCR, nice to see you. Thanks for the very nice comment.

NMGal, thank you for the nice comment. I can understand your feelings.

gastech1949, thanks for coming! In 2005 I documented the installation of the new pipe organ at our new church facility—it is a very detailed process. If interested, you can follow it here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/collections/72157600960784783/

Reuss, I appreciate your nice comment. According to Wikipedia, the Rieger organ was built in 1968—not really new, but not old, either. You are correct—the replication of many of these old instruments today would require millions of Dollars. For example, the organ in our new church (built in 2005 and 2010) cost about 2 million Dollars (paid by a single resident couple, BTW). It contains more than 4000 pipes, most up front and some in the balcony, and was built in Bonn, Germany.

Great captures, David! On a trip to Iceland, I visited an organmaker's shop and saw some of the "behind-the-scenes" work that goes into making these magnificent instruments. Then, on a visit to the Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik, I saw the organ there, standing 50 feet tall, with 72 stops and 5,275 pipes. With typical Icelandic humor, someone had taped the following sign(s) by the organist's bench.

A fascinating study and well photographed.

I think it was Arthur C. Clarke who said, "The level of advancement of any civilization may be measured by the complexity of their musical instruments." When you think these started out as a pre-historic person blowing through a hollow reed with a notch cut into it, Clarke's statement seems accurate.
