You say .........................

Did you find the option called 'SETTINGS'?

In addition there are other options called 'PICTURE MODE' and 'INPUT', did you find them?

Note that on the instruction pages shown where the diagram showing the 'Main Menu Features' it states for 'HDMI Only', is your monitor connected with an HDMI cable to the PC?

Yes it is.

I don't understand what you mean about contradictory statements. I tried the toggle switch early on. I've never seen a screen as you depicted and don't know where to look for it. Those are not contradictory at all.

As per the instructions shown you have to 'PRESS' the the joystick button (not left or right) to access the menu.

What options do you get on the screen when you PRESS the joystick button?

Whilst not shown in the instructions it 'may' be that you also have to hold it pressed for a short time.

When I press it, it turns it off or on. That's all. Pressing it to one direction offers volume control. To the other side is a size adjustment. To the back is something about gaming. None of these offer any menu of options that ever mentions brightness.

When you PRESS it, it should bring up a menu on the screen. (if you press for a while it will turn it on/off)

Does it bring up the menu?

If it does bring up the menu what are the options on that menu?

It does not bring up a menu.

Are you using Windows? Start button | Settings | Use search for Display | on my system the brightness setting is there.

Well if 'Pressing' the joystick button in does not bring up the menu where you can then access 'Settings', it sounds like you have a faulty monitor.

There is another option you could go for, LG provide software called 'On Screen Control'.

Here's what it gives you and the link ...........

That's where I supposed it would be. But no.

I don't know if you saw the note I posted that I had downloaded drivers. I thought they did nothing, but some time later I had a screen up that contained a brightness adjustment. I took the slider to the left (darker) but couldn't see that it had any affect. I then rebooted, but still couldn't see that it had any affect. I noted that the model number had an extra B and calls out Australia, so maybe it's not actually for my model.

Shown below is the window menu you should get up if you have downloaded the driver software successfully from the LG site. This should be easily accessible from your desktop somewhere and you will use the mouse to navigate it. If you are 100% sure that moving this 'Brightness' slider makes no difference it could be;

a) Your graphics card is overriding the monitor settings
b) Your graphics card driver needs updating
c) You have a faulty monitor

Altering the brightness and contrast is a fundamental basic that is going to be available on any modern monitor whether it is designated for the US, AUS or UK market. LG has a very comprehensive website with info on their models/specs/software including yours and a support system. You have the option to contact LG for advice but before doing that I would strongly recommend you provide clear concise information to them, examples ...

a) "I have an LG model xxxxxxxxx and can access the 'On Screen Control' but when moving the brightness slider using the mouse nothing happens".

b) "I have an LG model xxxxxxxxx and when pressing the joystick button to access the 'On Screen Display' and then moving it to the right the 'Settings' option is not shown.

Thanks for all your time and effort. Right now I'm going to learn to live with it, since it's not an easy fix as I'd hoped.

Actually I think it's not a difficult thing but the joystick thingy on the monitor is tricky that's all. You shouldn't give up on that.

What's not an easy fix?

You don't know what's wrong so how would you know if a fix is 'easy' or not?

How difficult would it be for you to contact LG for advice from the makers?

Sounds to me like a defeatist attitude, just not interested or don't actually have a problem.
