I had thought that USB drives had a spec like SD and microSD cards, where with no add-on, it could use up to 4GB, HD was from 8GB to 32GB, and XD was from 64GB on up (to over 1TB). I cannot find reference to that anywhere, though. But for the car, it is all about what the car specs say is the maximum capacity it can read, and what the file format must be. Check with the car dealership if it is a radio that was originally sold with the car, or the manufacturer of the stereo if it was an add-on after you bought the car.

Hope that helps.

So thanks all for the advice! Laramie suggested I try ridgecrop but for some reason my virus software was suspicious of the content & wouldn't let me download. I did find find a program from AOMEI that was up to the task. Plays just fine on the car. Right now I have 1617 tunes on 56.6 gb so as soon as I find the rest of my collection (buried in the basement somewhere) I'll have plenty of room.
I use Windows media player to rip the tunes I want. Interestingly, when I copy them back to the drive, it orders them, alphabetically, based on the number it was on the CD. So a disco tune might be followed by country western, classical, pop, rock . . . kind of like a box of chocolates - never know what you're going to get.
