"... splurge/whim?" Two undefined terms in a commercial photographer's paradigm.
Either you have clients and a compelling need owing to pending assignments or you invest time/effort/revenue in finding more clients...
That said, ponying up for the AF 135mm f/2 IF ED Nikkor was one of the wisest investments I've ever made. That optic has payed for itself many many times over.

The only F mount lens I don't have for my D850 is a super tele prime. I want to shoot animals and drag racing. I guess they go hand in hand. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
According to K. Rockwell's MTF curves the 120-300 2.8 is Nikon's sharpest telephoto lens - sharper than the 300 2.8 prime ! - and Canon and Sony do not have an answer for it either .....

I have that lens as a compliment to my 300-800mm f5.6. They handle all my wildlife and flower photos great.
OK OK you over thinkers....lets try this.....You know what you know and you are buying your first camera....what lens is first on your list?????

Given that we're splurging, I'd go with this in the VR version. (Actually, I already splurged on the VR version and love the lens--despite the fact that I had to buy a pack animal to carry it along with my D850.)

Now that is completely different. A splurge/whim purchase is something you want that isn’t essential. My first camera came with an 18-55 and essentially that is where I’d go, whatever is close to equivalent to 24-70mm on FF.

You still need to get more precise because now it depends on what camera you bought and what your budget is for the lens... or is the sky still the limit for a lens? That 120-300 Nikon somebody mentioned is pushing $10K US?? A good budget starter kit would be a used Nikon D5500 (KEH has one for $450-ish in EX+) and a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC ($300 at Amazon new with 6yr warranty). Go from there?

For an F mount -- probably the Nikon 24-120 f/4
If Z mount -- Nikon z 24-200 f/4-6.3 (though the Nikon z 24-120 f/4 would be VERY tempting instead)
I don't want any of you folks "splurging" on me. No one seems to have any imagination or sense of adventure.
Look up "splurge" in the dictionary. Try using it in a sentence just for practice. Quit being so practical and have a little fun.
