Which ONE F-mount DSLR lens....I've 5 on a D850....would you acquire on a splurge/whim?
Depends on what you shoot and your budget. My splurge was a used 600mm f/4G for my D850/D500 combination and I use it with the FTZ II adapter on my Z9. It was a big splurge.

I'd get the Nikkor 180-400 f/4E TC 1.4 zoom. It would be a definite splurge, and ideally someone else would finance the purchase.
Without knowing which 5 you already have and what kind of shooting you want to do it’s hard to advise.

I interpreted this post as a poll, rather than a request for counsel...

Could be, but seeing that he was specific about F mount I was thinking he’s trying to make a decision. If it’s a poll I’m going with the 400mm f/2.8

Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Art lens for my Nikon D7XXX bodies. A bit of wide angle, low light, great optics, and pretty close minimum focus distance for close-ups. They sell used for well under 500 USD in excellent condition, so that would be the clincher for me as I don't think my splurger is very fat right now. 🕺

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens

If it were me I think I'd consider the Z9 a "splurge", not the lens.

I saved a couple of years for the Z9, the splurge was getting a Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S with the Z9.

Well that 600 used is more than the Z9 new.
