Then you have three choices:
(1) remain where you are
(2) switch to another program
(3) try to find a used copy for sale with source disks

Option 3 is invalid. The v6 software does 100% try to 'phone home' to confirm the software serial number against your Adobe profile for the registered email. If that S/N isn't there, the install can't be completed. And, you have no way in 2022 to after-the-fact add that S/N into your profile for software last sold in 2017.

I could be wrong but even if you found a copy of the 5.7.1 upgrade executable, I wouldn’t bet on it running once you install. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you’ll be prompted to enter your email address and the software will attempt to handshake with Adobe.Com to verify your license, which will fail. For that reason, I’ve never tried to upgrade LR 5.7.1 to 6 on my computer.

Yes, that can be tricky, but if the original owner unregisters it, a new owner might be able to use it. There is a limit on how many machines can use LR, and I have had to uninstall it on one before I could install it on another. Maybe "uninstall" isn't the right term.

The transfer process is a technical possibility. In reality, do you expect that process to work for expired software bought on the internet from someone you don't know??

True statement, however, LR 5.7.1, update executables you download do not have user data embedded. So, if there is no handshaking until version 6, what's the risk (except for the trust and ethics) issue?

Of course! It's technology. What could go wrong? (See many of my previous posts. )

As a working photography professional, the cost of a subscription would be tax deductible.

I think our OP is fine at LR5.7. We'd have to pull the release notes and see if we could determine / confirm, but I'd expect any final v5.7.1 update to cover the final RAW updates rather than function differences.

The handshaking became more formal, as my foggy memory can recall. The v6 software just doesn't become operational without the s/n being confirmed in your profile at Adobe. I don't remember that same install failure from the v5.

Did they promise you they would support it forever, no. Release 5 came out in 2013, nine years ago and yes you own it. Much like a car 9 years old, you own it and very expensive to fix. When 6 came out it was wake-up call to think about the longevity of 5. You are basically using 5 it at your own risk and you own the risk! If your operating system takes an update, you could be dead in the water as interfaces can change. If you can find 5.7.1 and it fixes your problem praise whatever and think real hard about moving up. The next time you may end up dead in the water.

Our OP didn't say there was a problem. There probably isn't.

I was referring to ver 5.7. In the original post delottphoto said he wanted to update to 5.7

Update to what? That's where the idea of other people's software and / or Adobe validation comes and defeats this idea.

Ok. I thought source disks were still available for ver 5.7 if not then he’s stuck where he is at.

FYI - I happy with the subscription and i will renew for another year when it comes up.

You’re a working professional yet you’re not willing to pay the meager amount required to keep your important tools up to date?
