Unfortunately, Memorial Day feels like it has become just another holiday for most Americans. Hearing “Happy Memorial Day” just doesn’t seem right.
Maybe “Have a thoughtful Memorial Day” or “Have a meaningful Memorial Day”.
What do you think is a proper respectful reference?
(Disclaimer: I did not take the attached photo, but when I saw it I was struck by its ability to make me think about Memorial Day and it’s real meaning.)
True. It's just another holiday to go shopping for sales. Sad. Humans don't have long memories for some things.

Veterans day is on November 11th...and has always had that name...though the date of observance was changed in '68.
Memorial Day is separate from Vets day.
How do I observe it?
I certainly don't celebrate...there is nothing to celebrate.
At our house...it is a day of fasting...for the fallen have lost their appetite.
It is a day of staying home...for the dead do not travel.
It is a day of keeping still and silent...for the dead have no tongue.
No BBQ...no beer...no party.
Just observance and mindfulness for a day...a small sacrifice to honor the large sacrifice made by others.

We've allowed our schools to stop teaching academics and things that matter such as this to devote instead to social engineering. A very sad state of affairs.
Not sure I’d blame the whole human race. We seem to have developed our own strain of thoughtless, me oriented people (and I’m not blaming all, but it certainly seems like too many). As a vet, I can appreciate the occasional “thanks for your service,” but there are times, probably depending on my mood or daily events, when that comment seems very hollow. Too easy to say without recognizing what a combat soldier has endured, and believe me that statement carries no disrespect for the cook, supply Sgt., or anyone else who has served. Every time someone says that to me, I just want to let them know that for most of us in the thick of it, we were not fighting for our country, we were fighting for the guy next to us whether it was in a hastily made hole in the ground or our left seat. Most of my feelings about today are about the senseless loss of life we have been a part of since WWII. Little of what we have participated in has been for our national survival. I have too many of my brothers and sisters in arms who carry with them the remnants of their combat experience. OK, I’ll stop my rant. Have a thoughtful day!

Remember what they did, they didn’t want to, but they did it anyway…because they believed it was right..

Veteran's Day was originally Armistice Day, and my birthday, way back in 1931. It honored the vets of World War I.
Agree: "Just observance and mindfulness for a day...a small sacrifice to honor the large sacrifice made by others."

That's the proper way to observe the day.
