Yup, there's a Kindle Reader for Mac. Probably for iOS devices too. (I have none of the latter)

Apple phones/tablets can download the Kindle app free. It syncs between devices. I use it frequently on my phone when I’m waiting for something to happen, but prefer the actual Kindle when possible.
Problem solved - I think. Last night, I connected a USB Micro-to-USB C adapter to the Kindle, and I plugged the USB C cable into that. It worked. Maybe the shape of that adapter makes better contact with the Kindle's USB socket.
