He usually does a good job capturing his character in movies although he has some busts like Vanilla Sky. The one movie I've avoided is Reacher -- I've read all the Reacher novels and why on earth they would cast him as Reacher who is 6'1" and 220 lbs. is a mystery to me. I just couldn't wrap my mind around him in that role. Of course I blame the books author for letting the studio cast him. The author should have retained a veto in character assignment.
Agree 100%. I'm not a Cruise fan in any event, but the idea of him as Reacher is beyond ludicrous. What was casting thinking? Had they never read the books?

The TV series captures Reacher much better.

There's an article that says Lee Child approved of Cruise despite his size, and explains why.
https://epicstream.com/article/tom-cruise-jack-reacher-no-more It's a good bet that most of the film's audience knows nothing about the character from the books, and Cruise is one of the most bankable talents in film. From a let's-make-a-movie standpoint that's about all you need, and when the author approves too, well it's time to start filming.
I had read a couple of the Reacher books before seeing the first movie, and remembered that he was a really BIG guy where Cruise wasn't. But as Lee Child said, Cruise has a presence (as well as great physical skills). So I didn't spend much time thinking about his size, just enjoyed the film. And I've watched it a few times since. (Only watched the second one once, thought it was OK but not worth watching again.)
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the new Jack Reacher. And hope they make more films with him.
I'm always puzzled by those who diss a movie or a book just because it doesn't fit their concept of realism. Come on, man....... it's entertainment. Suspend your idea of the real world and just enjoy the book or move.

I agree about Reacher. I too have read all the Reacher books, including the latest which he co-wrote with his brother Andrew (who also writes books under the name of Andrew Grant). You need to watch the Amazon series "Reacher". The lead actor is a real Reacher.
You have Amazon Prime streaming on your TV?
'Reacher' series features Alan Ritchson as Reacher. He is huge 6"5' ,built like a bull.
He has been such a hit they've started the next two series.
Everything Childs wanted.

Guess I am a little off with my thinking. I go to movies for the entertainment value knowing it is fantasy and don’t expect everything to be accurate as though it was a documentary. Along with that I am able to just sit back and enjoy. How many people like Star Wars…not a lot of realism there but fun to watch. But to each their own.

I saw an eight minute trailer of "Top Gun - Maverick" on YouTube. That's about all I will be seeing of the movie. However, it is more than what I saw of the original "Top Gun" movie.
I was thinking about watching "Top Gun" on Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube or whatever but wasn't willing to pay eight bucks to rent it.
It's free on spectrum on demand. The original top gun
Although he stars in some jingoistic tripe watching Cruise and Nicholson cross swords in "A few good men" for me was a realisation of what a great actor he is.
Have you watched Reacher on Amazon Prime? Big guy, good show. Never mind. Someone already made the same comment.
I suspect why he was cast in the Reacher movies was because Tom Cruise pulls in a lot of profit for the studios.
