I am traveling to Prague and Vienna in a couple of weeks with a choir for a week. I recently got a new phone, and I purposely got the new Google Pixel 6 Pro just because of the camera, and thinking that it would be great to not have the hassle of lugging a DSLR around. But now I'm having second thoughts. I'm just afraid I might regret it if I don't take my camera. I have a Nikon D7100, and I would probably just take my Tamron 18-400 lens. Definitely do not want to have extra lenses, etc. I do have a holster type bag that I got just for that lens - but it is still an extra bag to bring. How have others packed for a trip like this? I'm wondering if a laptop type carry-on would work. I could just put the camera and lens in the padded section, and still have room for other carry-on stuff. We're allowed one carry-on and one "personal bag". So this would be my personal bag, and I could put my purse in the other carry-on. I do not want to put the camera in my checked luggage. And the last time I traveled abroad (22 years ago! I had a film camera then...) on at least one leg of the flight they made us check the carry-on bag because there wasn't room for them in the bins.... So thoughts, please!

Laurel, just came back from 3 weeks Europe. I have an iPhone 11 and took a lot of photos for posting to families. However as good as cell phones are today, you'll regret not having a capable camera. I traveled with my Sony RX-10IV and would never consider traveling with only a cell phone to capture the sights. Yes the RX10 is a relatively large bridge camera but its awesome for travel, no extra lenses to carry plus W/A and an excellent telephoto. As mentioned above, a smaller bridge camera with reasonable reach such as the Sony RX100vii, Lumix LX100, Canon Powershot, Fuji and others....they now have truly excellent lenses with a variety of zooms.

Take your camera, you will not regret it. Enjoy, be safe and shoot, shoot, shoot. Cheers

I did the same trip a few years ago...but also went to Poland (a great country that values freedom.) Anyhoo, here is a data plot of the focal lengths I used in about 1700 shots...bottom line, most of them are wide. And for the life of me, I cannot figure I used the in camera electronic tele what ever it is called as a lark.)

This is, of course, my style. Unless shooting wildlife this data is pretty consistent with my shooting style. Don't miss the Sedlic Osuary = church made of human bones. It is a reminder to all of us that were are mortal and well worth a side trip.

Wouldn't lug or use anything beyond 120mm.

Really, then your missing quite a lot. I take my pocket Sony HX99, has a 24-720mm Zeiss lens attached, and yes, I very often shoot above 120mm, way above.

Whenever I travel I always take my dslr and a backup body. My 18-400 stays on the lens. I take my Nikon 18-300 as a backup

I never take a laptop with me when I travel. I take plenty of cards and download them when I get home. Slot 1 for raw files slot 2 for jpeg as backup. It is a large card so I don’t usually have to change it out.

I also take a lot of shots with my iPhone to share while I’m on the trip. The trip we just got back from I used my iPhone 13 pro. It took some great pictures and I will be using a few of them in the travel book I will make of out trip

I have a wheel bag for carry on and rest my backpack on the roller bag so I don’t have to carry it.

Have a great trip.

Chuck

Today many photographers travel with mirrorless or bridge cameras. They are practical, light, fit anywhere and offer very good image quality.
I use Olympus and what I have noticed is that when I use the rear monitor of the camera to focus I attract less attention than when I use the viewfinder. To me that is a bonus.

I realize she already has her choices to choose from but I just wanted to give a shout out for your Olympus suggestion regarding travel. A small, lightweight, weather resistant body with the excellent 12-40 lens would be a perfect companion for 95% of shots along with providing great stabilization. Why lug around bulk and weight ? Enjoy the experience.

Very good point! Now, how do I pack it?

I use a Corvette Cooler Bag Soft Ice Chest - Black with Gray with both hand grabs and a shoulder strap.

The shoulder strap can be adjusted to attach to a four-wheeled suitcase/carry-on for transport.
It is well insulated/padded, has Many zippered (even the top) compartments to isolate batteries, chargers, cables, etc., and doesn't scream "Steal Me".
At: 13” L x 9” W x 9” it has also easily stowed under the seat in front of me on every size plane that I have flown to Europe.
It works for me carrying a Canon 5DIV with a Canon 28-300mm attached and my essential travel chargers, meds, etc. In short, it makes me . . .

For the last 8 or more trips to Europe I have used a High sierra Wheeled 17 -in Laptop Back pack to carry the large laptop, the associated cables, my meds and the a carbon fiber tripod plus a change of clothes when the luggage gets lost.
The 30 day April-May 2022 trip we took to Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro I took my D500 with Nikon wide angle zoom and the 18-300 zoom carried in a custom made messenger bag. I did not take my tripod and did not miss it except for a few waterfall shots and night views. I did not take my sb800 flash and I wish I had. I took the D500 because it is lighter than the much heavier D850 and the 3 lenses.
I have not reviewed all the photos yet, so I do not know if I have any wall hangers yet.
The lighter and less expensive 18 to 300 zoom is not as sharp as the FX lenses I use; but as a walk around it is great.
We rented a car and stayed in 6 different towns and cities in Airbnb rentals that had washers so we packed light on clothing.

Side note I find that I frequently swap lenses on D850 from the f/2.8 24 to 70 zoom and the 70 to 200 and use the 16 to 28 less often.

Your 18-400 is all you need. I would consider a shoulder strap with a cable in it. B & H for about $25.00.

Just want to wish you happy holiday in Vienna! Every time I hear/read that name it brings back very good memories. My Dad's foster-sister lived there and I spent a few very pleasant vacations with her and her family.
This is already some 50 years ago, but still vivid in my memory.
Hope you can climb stairs, climbing up the tower of the Stephan's Church is certainly worthwhile.
One warning: as I was walking through the city, camera strap around my neck, I was approached by a young person offering to take my photo with my camera. I declined each time and would not take the camera off my neck.
When I told my aunt about this after it happened the first time, she told me, they are only out to get your camera so they can sell it and get a bit of money for it.

75% of my photos are of distant lands. I do use a phone at times, but always take a nice camera. I but the camera bag in a backpack and remove it to carry around after arriving. My wife uses either a very small crossbody zip purse or just a credit card wallet in the front pocket and a backpack while walking through the cities. Large (larger then a liter bottle) purses can make you a major target for thieves. If a larger purse is in your roundhouse though, we tend to use PacSafe purses and pouches because they have significant theft deterrent features. Look at REI or a travel store or Amazon. A secure travel purse is a cheap investment. I always recommend everyone reads the security section of the travel guide site by Rick Steves before heading to Europe. Have fun. You will see some amazing sites and travel builds nice friendships too.

Travel bag: I have been using the Lowepro Passport Sling for about ten years as my travel camera bag. It fits a camera body with lens attached plus an extra lens; it also has small pockets for memory cards, spare batteries, etc. It is expandable so you could also stuff a light sweater into it. It has outside pockets for maps, guide books, and one for a water bottle. So it works great as a day pack to walk around a city like Vienna or Prague. It also is small enough to count as "personal item" on airplanes. I travel internationally two or three times a year (I write this from Berlin), and I always carry a backpack and the Lowepro Passport Sling as cabin luggage. The Sling also is small enough to fit underneath the seat, if needed.

The Lowepro Passport Sling also is a good bag from a security point-of-view. I used to travel with a backpack as a camera bag, until mine got sliced open at a bus terminal in Ecuador, which is when I switched to this bag. You can carry it in the back, on the side, or in front. You can take your camera in and out of the back effortlessly while keeping your eye on the street. With a backpack, you have to take it off your back to take your camera out or put it away. The bag also does not look like a camera bag, so it does not automatically identify you as a tourist.

I just now looked this bag up on B&H, "no longer available".

I’ve had one of those for years. Never had anyone try and cut it or steal my camera.

Photo trip or choir trip?

If the former, take the "big" camera; if the latter, enjoy the experience, and take the phone.

Know that you can get some GREAT images made with the Pixel 6, and make memories to last a lifetime, without wasting a lot of time fiddling around with camera gear. So often, I see people in exotic places, looking through lenses, instead of bathing in, & absorbing, the one-time experience.

Sure, you won't get super telephoto shots with the phone, but you will, with a very little effort, end up with a lot of photos you'll be very happy with.

Ignore the phone/camera nay-sayers, most of whom seem to be too entrenched to risk learning anything new. Apple has made a lot of great ads using the iPhone to take make images; the Pixel 6 camera is at least as good, and some of the software (esp.for low light) is phenomenal.

B&H may no longer carry it (this is where I got mine) but it still is available.

I am sure there are similar sling bags that will perform in a similar fashion
